PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teaches cosmetology skills and knowledge full-time to students in grades 9-12.

• Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the competency-based course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.

• Develops lesson plans, maintains a plan book, and organizes class time so that preparation, instruction, shop work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within the allotted time.

• Demonstrates occupational materials, equipment, tools, and processes using standard or teacher-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids in accordance with the Cosmetology competency-based task listing.

• Instructs pupils in the appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation and use of the tool, machinery, and equipment.

• Grades and monitors student progress through the use of progress reports, report cards, and student competency lists.

• Communicates with employers, parents, and school counselors on individual pupil progress.

• Attends special education individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, where the teacher’s presence is required.

• Provides supervision and extra help to students where needed.

• Attends meetings as required by the teacher contracts.

• Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent-Director.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position may require long periods of standing on concrete floors, bending over customers, or working in confined spaces with exposure to dust, chemicals, and gases.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month, school-year position (183 days). Initial salary will be established by the Superintendent-Director in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract. Fringe benefits as outlined in the Teachers’ Contract

As per the Teachers’ Contract.

• QUALIFICATIONS:
  
  1. Must hold the appropriate Chapter 74 teaching license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education or be eligible to obtain such a license.
  Requirements to obtain:
  
  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  
  • Five years of recent full-time employment experience directly related to cosmetology
  
  • Passing score on the written and performance exam for cosmetology
  
  • Possession of a current MA Cosmetology license
  
  • Achieve a passing score of either Vocational Technical Literacy Skills or Communication and Literacy Skills
  2. Must demonstrate the ability to work with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the public in creating an atmosphere where individuals feel welcome and respected.
  3. Must be able to work as part of a team and independently.
  4. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  5. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Must be comfortable using computers and software.
  7. Prior teaching experience preferred.

  JOB GOAL:
  To develop in each pupil an awareness and understanding coupled with the basic skills and knowledge applicable to cosmetology in the business or public sector; and to instill in each pupil safe working habits, the importance of continuation of his/her education, and the assets of reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability.

• High School/Trade School degree preferred.
