Job Description

The Student Support Specialist (SSS) supports students and staff, helping the school maintain a safe and supportive environment. The SSS is highly visible and provides routine supervision of hallways, student arrival and dismissal, and the cafeteria. They assist with behavioral incidents, collaborate with the Assistant Principal and Manager of Student Services to track and manage data related to student behavior, and act as a substitute teacher when teachers are absent.

The SSS also proctors state and benchmark assessments and is an active member of the Student Services Team, contributing to a respectful school culture that exemplifies the Sizer Six and supports classroom management.

Major Responsibilities
  • Assist the Assistant Principal and Student Services Team in ensuring a safe and orderly school environment, including management of student issues and behavioral concerns.
  • Monitor common areas during student arrival, hallway transitions, lunch, and afternoon dismissal; assist with locking and unlocking student bathrooms.
  • Support student academic achievement and positive behavior under direction of the Manager of Student Services, Assistant Principal, and/or Principal.
  • Coordinate with the REACH Coach to supervise students in disciplinary restriction, including in‑school suspension and lunch reflections.
  • Retrieve work for students in in‑school suspension and provide appropriate academic support.
  • Provide in‑class coaching to improve student behavior and academic performance.
  • Act as a substitute classroom teacher as needed.
  • Proctor and assist with administering academic testing.
  • Model appropriate behavior and professional conduct at all times.
  • Prepare documents and reports, maintaining sensitive and confidential files.
  • Model and encourage community practices consistent with the Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools.
  • Adhere to Sizer School policies and maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Remain highly visible during school hours, especially in hallways during transitions and in common areas.
  • Report concerns to an administrator in a professional and timely manner.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
  • Prior experience in a school setting working with at‑risk youth (preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience (preferred).
  • Ability to effectively manage high‑stress situations and adapt to complex circumstances.
  • Strong ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with restorative justice model (preferred).
  • Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with technology (Google Workspace) and basic office equipment.
  • Ability to pass CORI and National Criminal Background Check.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
