Job Description:Position Overview:
The Professional Math Tutor for TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a dedicated educational professional who provides targeted mathtutoring to college students who are first-generation, low-income,and/or students with disabilities. This role involves offering personalized support to help students develop their mathematical skills, build confidence in their abilities, and achieve academic success in their coursework. The tutor will work closely with theTRIO SSS team to ensure that students receive the necessary resources and guidance to overcome academic challenges and succeedin their college studies.
Key Responsibilities:Individualized Tutoring:
- Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in variousmath subjects and math related concepts in other coursework,including but not limited to algebra, calculus, statistics,college-level math courses, chemistry, and physics.
- Assess students' current understanding of mathematical concepts and tailor tutoring sessions to address individual learning needsand goals.
- Assist students in developing effective study strategies,problem-solving skills, and critical thinking abilities.
- Adapt tutoring techniques and materials to accommodate thediverse learning styles and needs of TRIO SSS students, includingthose with disabilities.
- Collaborate with the Disability Services Office to implement appropriate accommodations and ensure an inclusive learning environment.
- Encourage a positive and supportive atmosphere that fostersconfidence and academic growth for students from underrepresentedbackgrounds.
- Track and monitor students' progress, providing regular feedback and reports to the TRIO SSS staff and academicadvisors.
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, studentattendance, and academic outcomes.
- Participate in regular meetings with the TRIO SSS team todiscuss student progress and identify additional supportneeds.
- Develop and conduct math-focused workshops and group studysessions to address common challenges and reinforce keyconcepts.
- Collaborate with other tutors and TRIO SSS staff to designcomprehensive study programs that integrate math skills with broader academic success strategies.
- Serve as a mentor and advocate for TRIO SSS students, providingguidance on navigating academic challenges and utilizing campus resources effectively.
- Encourage students to develop self-advocacy skills and take ownership of their academic journey.
- Stay current with best practices in math education andtutoring, particularly in the context of working withfirst-generation, low-income, and disabled students.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and training sessions provided by the TRIO SSS program and the institution.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field required. A Master's degree or equivalent experience in matheducation or tutoring is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in tutoring or teaching mathat the college level.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, includingfirst-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities, is highly desirable.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of college-level math concepts and the abilityto explain them in a clear and accessible manner.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and maintain a supportive, encouraginglearning environment.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and needs.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and online learning platforms to enhance tutoring sessions.
- This is a part-time position with flexible hours to accommodatestudent schedules.
- Tutoring sessions may take place in-person or virtually,depending on the needs of the students and the institution'spolicies.
