Nature of Work
Under supervision performs legal work of moderate difficulty, recording and documenting court proceedings for hearings of various complexity and duration. Responsibilities include processing, distributing court documents and legal papers, interacting with judicial officials, attorneys, court staff, criminal justice officials, and parties in all types of actions, and performing related work as assigned.
Hiring Salary Ranges- Court Technician I: $45,560.00 – $47,838.00
- Court Technician II: $49,116.00 – $51,571.80
- Attend court hearings of various complexity and duration.
- Determine, summarize, and record points and decisions reached during proceedings.
- Extract information from courtroom and prepare cohesive minute entries.
- Access, input, and maintain data in an automated case management system.
- Provide monthly recaps of all under‑advisements and hearing statistics.
- Interpret, explain, and apply specific statutes, code regulations, and procedures.
- Impanion of grand jury and trial juries.
- Take, transcribe, and docket courtroom dictation.
- Process and distribute official records of formal orders and other documents at the judge’s direction.
- Maintain control of case files during hearings and ensure files are available at scheduled times.
- Update court and judge calendars based on court orders and coordinate schedules with judicial assistants.
- Keep records of matters taken under advisement to assure timely judicial rulings.
- Mark and maintain all submitted exhibits and ensure they are available at scheduled hearings.
- Certify documents.
- Read indictment or information preceding criminal trials.
- Close out criminal case files, including reporting felony convictions.
- Issue bench warrants and prepare and maintain files.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Attend all court hearings and perform duties similar to Court Technician I, with additional responsibilities.
- Prepare and submit motor vehicle department abstracts and DPS disposition reports using computer applications.
- Summarize court proceedings in minute entry format.
- Create, process, and distribute official records of formal orders and documents at the judge’s direction.
- Impanion of grand jury and trial juries.
- Assume monthly recap responsibilities and maintain records of under‑advisements.
- Update court and judge calendars based on court orders and coordinate schedules with judicial assistants.
- Mark and maintain exhibits to ensure availability at hearings.
- Certify documents and enter data into automated case management systems.
- Read indictment or information preceding criminal trials.
- Issue bench warrants and prepare/maintain files.
- Assist in training court technicians.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Shorthand, data entry, transcription, and taking dictation at desk or in court. Work with and around other court staff, clerk staff, attorneys, defendants, and the public; handle interruptions; repetitive hand/wrist motions for data entry and transcription; maintain visual acuity for computer and courtroom tasks.
Minimum Qualifications – Court Technician I- Two years of business experience or training in business procedures; keyboarding skills of 50 words per minute; ability to take dictation at 60 words per minute and/or experience with digital recording equipment; OR
- Associate degree in a related field plus two years of business experience or training; keyboarding and dictation skills as above; OR
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating ability to perform required duties.
- Three years of progressively responsible clerical work, including at least one year as Court Technician I; OR
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating ability to perform required duties.
- Knowledge of juvenile delinquency and/or juvenile dependency processes.
- Prior experience in a court, legal, or justice system setting.
- Proven ability to take, summarize, and transcribe meeting minutes or legal proceedings.
