Summary of
Job Duties:
Adaptive ski instructors actively teach safe, effective, and fun lessons for High Country Adaptive Sports participants of varying disciplines. Instructors engage with students and volunteers through assessments, lessons, and events. Instructors can also expand their teaching scope by working for Arizona Snowbowl Ski and Ride School. The position requires continual training, expansion of disability knowledge, and passion and respect for working with those with disabilities.
PositionFunctions / Areas of Responsibility
- Prepare equipment for each day's lessons, including rentals or sit skis
- Assist students with waivers, pay, and paperwork
- Teach skiing and snowboarding lessons according to HCAS teaching progressions, regardless of weather conditions
- Respectfully collaborate with various Snowbowl departments throughout daily operations
- Teach students from age 4 to older adults with any kind of disability.
- Collaborate with other HCAS staff, instructors, and volunteers to ensure program success.
- Learn to adapt all equipment to varying abilities through training and lessons.
- Establish a strong pre-lesson plan and on-snow assessment.
- Adhere to all risk management protocols to ensure the safety of all students and instructors.
- Write daily progress reports for each lesson taught to help track and evaluate student goals and progressions.
- Communicate respectfully and think critically to promote a positive program culture.
- Attend mentorship meetings, as well as staff meetings as planned by Programs Director
- Assist with basic administrative tasks and maintenance
Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field of study or in pursuit of a degree in the field of study desired
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities
- PSIA/AASI Certification and Experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think creatively, and work collaboratively and independently
- Active problem solver
- Ability to advocate for what your student needs most
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Commitment to continuous skills/ teaching improvement
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Flexible availability working weekly shifts contingent on the program schedule
- Available 2-5 days a week, December 1st, 2024 - March 31st, 2025
- Attend one Staff Orientation at beginning of season
- Attend at least three training sessions (clinics) throughout season to help supplement knowledge for both adaptive and able-bodied skiing
- First Aid/CPR/AED certified (can be completed after hiring)
- Concussion Protocol completed (can be completed after hiring)
- Able to lift 75 pounds (i.e., kids on skis)
- Able to function in cold, snowy weather, as well as warm, sunny weather
- Able to be in boots and on skis/board throughout the week
- Able to lift sit skis on and off lift, tether if applicable (training provided)
- Must be able to ski and/or snowboard at a minimum of an intermediate level (Groomed Green/Blue Terrain)
- Must be able to access the internet to manage your work schedule
- Practice effective team behavior and demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships
Starting at $20 per hour. Pay incentives based on years of past experience and certifications
