The Pharmacy Operations Manager’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: strategic planning; designing, managing, and improving the medication-use system; ensuring quality outcomes through performance-improvement activities; leading drug-utilization efforts; optimizing use of information systems and technology; managing the pharmaceutical supply chain, pharmacy department financial operations, and human resources; ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements; fulfilling the organization’s research and educational missions;
and providing institutional representation and leadership. The pharmacy manager fulfills these responsibilities through his or her own actions, proper delegation to competent individuals on his or her staff, and collaborative efforts with other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinates department staffing to assure adequate personnel is available for providing pharmacy services.
- Oversees pharmacist and pharmacy technician training and competency testing.
- Responsible for pharmacist and direct report pharmacy technician evaluations and goal setting.
- Assists in staff recruitment and retention processes.
- Writes, maintains, reviews, and regularly communicates policies and procedures related to the provision of pharmaceutical care.
- Responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of cybersecurity trends, developments, best practices and regulatory changes.
- Coordinates and maintains documentation of clinical drug studies and the use of investigational drugs.
- Assures effective interdepartmental and medical staff interactions.
- Attends medical staff department meetings when necessary and helps coordinate business agenda with Pharmacy Managers for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Supports employee/staff engagement initiatives. Serves as a champion of organization culture, influencing culture change to support the NAH values.
- Provides for clinically proficient staff.
- Functions as a staff pharmacist when necessary to meet department workload requirements.
- Participates in process improvement to ensure safe and efficient delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients.
- Communicates with patient care units and staff to ensure efficient pharmacy services.
- Oversees the evaluation, selection and use of medications on a continuous basis. Oversees revisions, non-formulary use and the review processes of effective formulary management system.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the inpatient pharmacy drug distribution system. Works closely with staff for process and quality improvements.
- Acts as liaison between pharmacy and other departments related to pharmacy drug distribution services.
- Oversees project planning and implementation relating to drug distribution.
- Responsible for pharmacy department security for personnel, medications, and equipment.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances.
- Monitors and trends the incidence of adverse drug events and makes recommendations to improve pharmacy systems to enhance patient safety.
- Maintains and operationalizes current pharmaceutical care knowledge and awareness of healthcare trends in order to effectively manage all aspects of the provision of pharmaceutical care.
- Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.
- If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.li>
- Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.
- Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
