Position: Probation Officer II - Adult Probation (0626)

Nature of Work

Under general supervision performs professional duties ranging from moderate to difficult in providing correctional casework services to assigned individuals under probation supervision at the direction of the superior court; performs related work as assigned; establishes and maintains a positive and healthy work environment.

The Mission of the Coconino County Adult Probation Department is to create a safer community by reducing the number of future crimes, thereby reducing the number of future victims. This is to be accomplished by providing to our clients individualized programming and supervision to include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral education, treatment and supervision based upon individual assessment of risk and need.
  • Restorative justice to the community and victims.
  • Community and client involvement and collaboration.
  • Effective, quality-based methods of supervision.
  • Measurable processes and outcomes.
Typical Duties
  • Performs social investigations and evaluations of assigned defendants including interviews with relatives, members of social agencies, employers, and others, prepares required reports and assessments and makes recommendations to the Court.
  • Advises and supervises individuals on probation as ordered by the Court in order to enforce compliance with court directives.
  • Develops and implements client-based programs and refers clients/individuals under supervision for placement in needed services.
  • Appears and testifies in court.
  • Builds positive working relationships with individuals under supervision.
  • Conducts visits with individuals at the office, their residence and at various sites.
  • May perform searches, urinalysis collection, makes employment contacts; makes arrests, provides crisis intervention.
  • Enters data and provides statistical data for computer-based management.
  • Maintains written and computerized records, runs reports, and verifies statistics with central records.
  • Tracks client payments.
  • Consults with attorneys and works with victims and community agencies.
  • May transport individuals under supervision.
  • May counsel individuals under supervision.
  • Works in partnership with the community for input, planning, and accountability (Restorative Justice).
  • Trains other officers.
  • Makes most case decisions independently.
Essential Functions

Driving; sitting at a desk; working with and around other staff and clients; repetitive motion (hand‑wrist) for writing and typing; vision‑acuity (near) for reading and writing; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for interviews, fieldwork and communicating with staff and the public; touch (finger dexterity) for typing and writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with a preference being given to a major or minor in the Behavioral Sciences (Supreme Court Order 73‑1 TR‑ADM‑PROB) and two years progressively responsible experience as a probation officer; minimum age of 21 years; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Additional Requirements

Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment since persons convicted of a felony may not be childcare workers in Arizona.

Probation I underfill requirements: A bachelor’s degree. Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment; must obtain Arizona State driver's license by date of hire and maintain throughout employment; must successfully complete Probation Officer Certification Academy within first year of employment. No experience required. Criminal history, background and psychological evaluation will be done prior to hiring. Probation Officer I base annual salary is $52,236.

This position may require overnight shifts, holidays and weekends.

This position is non‑exempt from overtime.

This position is safety sensitive.
