Position Summary
DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public. It involves courteous, considerate and prompt service to the public.

Salary: $37,838 – $50,848 annually / Hourly: $18.19 – $24.44 per hour.
Grade: 14-19
$4,000 hiring incentive applicable.
Note: Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
Job Duties Highway Operations WorkerEntry level for the Highway Operations Technician series.
Duties include:
- Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
- Pavement care and preservation
- Landscape care and preservation
- Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
- Signing and striping
- Delivery of equipment and materials
- Environmental compliance
- Vehicle and equipment care
Apprentice classification. Responsibilities are similar to the entry level but with more advanced duty scope, including:
- Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
- Pavement care and preservation
- Landscape care and preservation
- Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
- Signing and striping
- Delivery of equipment and materials
- Environmental compliance
- Vehicle and equipment care
Intermediate level with broad scope of duties and leadership responsibilities such as scheduling, assigning, supervising subordinates, inspecting work, and training staff. Primary tasks mirror those of Tech 1.
Highway Operations Tech 3Full journey classification with high‑level duties and supervisor responsibilities. Includes all tasks from Tech 2 plus overarching leadership functions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway related experience required (e.g., operating motorized vehicles, signing/striping, pavement care, tunnel maintenance, landscape care).
Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of related experience required.
Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of related experience required.
Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of related experience required.
Selective PreferencesHighway Operations Worker: Obtain Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and a Class “A” CDL within 6 months.
Highway Operations Tech 1-3: Prior to start date hold an Arizona Class “A” CDL for manual or automatic transmission with a (N) tanker endorsement. Additional endorsements may be required based on area.
Pre‑Employment RequirementsRegistration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse required for all CDL holders. Candidates must authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL during employment. Register at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./Register
Position responds to emergency call‑outs 24/7; must be able to respond to maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
Work may involve extremes of cold and heat, rugged terrain, and high‑speed traffic conditions.
Must be able to lift/carry or push/pull 50 lbs.
Maintains a valid class‑appropriate driver’s license and passes all required training and record checks. Employees must retain statutory liability insurance when using a personally owned vehicle on state business.
All newly hired state employees must complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
