Job Summary:

Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic II
. This is a dedicated on-site shop position (not on-call for emergency road service). The Shop Trailer Technician II performs certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and other duties as assigned, including work on aluminum/chem-lite components, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework. Under supervision, this role may perform more advanced repairs and assists senior technicians as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge learned through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform duties; interpret technical information related to the job.
  • Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs and provide information or assistance as needed.
  • Manage concurrent tasks with effective prioritization of work and time allocations.
  • Operate with integrity, honesty, and confidentiality; adhere to ethical and professional standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) and DOT inspections, followed by needed repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company devices or Karmak application.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other required documentation promptly.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and work within standard repair times when possible.
  • Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates and discuss RO findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, and DOT).
  • Complete all mandatory safety training and participate in safety programs.
  • Maintain shop-assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems (including aluminum/chem-lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, trailer steering systems).
  • Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various trailer systems; install welding, fabricate, and replace panels, body, and framework as needed.
  • Identify problems, assess information relevance, and generate/evaluate alternatives using sound judgment.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to equipment to diagnose malfunctions using appropriate tools (handheld computers, pressure gauges, etc.).
  • Assist Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics as needed.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED with 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or 5 years of related field experience.
  • Possess and provide a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participate in and complete all company-required training.
  • Due to interstate operating authority, candidates must be at least 21 years old.
Required Certifications
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification or obtained within 18 months of employment.
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE T4 (Brakes)
  • ASE T5 (Suspension)
  • ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems)
  • ASE T7 (HVAC)
  • ASE 608/609 certification*
