POSITION SUMMARYMcKenna Building Officials and Inspectors are problem‑solving professionals who collaborate with team members and outside partners. They thrive on variety, have a strong background in construction, are well‑versed in area building codes and have experience interpreting them.
RESPONSIBILITIESThe Building Official/Inspector is committed to ensuring project success, from providing thorough, consistent, and helpful inspections, to delivering meaningful and effective plan reviews. This position supports clients in the greater Lansing area. Specifically:
- Provide plan review and inspection services, serving as the expert on building safety and code enforcement
- Work on harmonious teams with other inspectors, plan reviewers, and administrative staff
- Assist Project Managers in improving existing inspection and review systems
- Perform field inspections during various stages of construction
- Review plans and specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal laws and regulations
- Perform Rental Housing inspections in accordance with municipal ordinances and regulations
- Report violations and maintain files/records
- Build relationships with current and future clients to increase awareness of McKenna and our work products
- Ability to effectively collaborate with clients (under supervision) and other McKenna professionals
- Capability to multi-task, set priorities, and work under pressure
- Knowledge of local building codes and current construction procedures/technology
- Interpretation of codes in the field and ability to provide code compliant solutions
- Must possess the ability to positively interact with staff members, the public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele
Successful Building Professionals most often possess the following knowledge and skills:
Five (5) or more years of success in professional building services, whether municipal or private
- Must be licensed to enforce the State of Michigan Building Code, maintain registration as a code official with the Michigan Department of Labor, Bureau of Construction Codes, pursuant to Act 407, in the category of Building Inspector or Plans Examiner
- Ability to use BS&A software a plus or ability to learn the software
- Act 407 and/or other complimentary professional certifications a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective time management, organization, and attention to detail skills
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment
- Ability to respectfully function as a productive and enthusiastic member of a team, under the direction of McKenna’s Leadership Team and Project Managers
Physical Requirements
This is a field-based position involving frequent local, in-state travel (no overnights). The role requires standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, working in confined spaces, and working in various weather conditions. Excellent manual dexterity is required to operate hand tools and other equipment. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
