Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job
:

Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications.

In addition, faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section:

Specific Teaching Assignment

Faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses in Early Childhood Education, adhering to the stated course objectives, content, and delivery. Working with the Early Childhood Education Coordinator, the instructor:

  • Provides instruction in early childhood education theory and practice to a diverse student population within the Early Childhood Education Program.
  • Plans, develops, evaluates and revises curriculum in early childhood education.
  • Prepares for teaching by developing current syllabi, examination and learning activities.
  • Plans and develops instruction to be delivered in both classroom presentations and through alternate delivery formats as appropriate to student needs and subject matter requirements.
  • Creates a supportive learning environment in the classroom and outside of this venue by being responsive to students’ academic needs.
  • Provides for on-going assessment of curriculum implementation, applicability of field learning experiences, and progress of individual students through the program courses.
Supervisory Responsibility

Faculty are sometimes called upon to perform quasi-supervisory responsibilities.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of experience teaching young children (birth – age
    8) in a licensed early childhood setting.
  • Experience with use of computer-based instruction, such as: distance learning, learning management software (Canvas), and/or modularized courseware. Ability to apply such knowledge to teaching.
  • Evidence of current CA/ (child abuse and neglect) clearance from Michigan Department of Human Services or ability to obtain prior to hire.
  • Must be able to pass a national criminal background check (fingerprint), per the State of Michigan, prior to hire.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in early childhood and/or special education, and in teaching.
  • Must be able to demonstrate evidence of successful teamwork in a professional environment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds (size of a pre-school child).
  • Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
  • Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
