Position Description

The College of Innovation and Technology offers several undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering and technology including Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. Faculty develop experiential learning environments and provide mentorship to students through a combination of course-work and faculty-led research projects. Current research areas include electrical power and energy systems, experimental and computational fluid dynamics, additive manufacturing, biotech engineering, autonomous vehicle technology, and composite materials.

The Mechanical Engineering program in the College of Innovation & Technology (CIT) at the University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for tenure-track positions at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank with expertise in artificial intelligence integration into any of the subdomains of Mechanical Engineering such as:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Systems and IoT
  • Autonomous and Intelligent Operations
  • Biomedical and Biomechanical Engineering
  • Computational Modeling, Simulation, and Multiphysics Systems
  • Control Systems, Robotics, and Automation
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Material Design, Processing and Characterization
  • Mechatronics and Controls
  • Power, Energy Conversion, and Storage Systems
  • Thermofluids

The College continues to develop strong ties with regional industries leading to applied research and experiential learning opportunities. Startup packages for the successful candidates include generous funding.

CIT is growing and in the midst of a significant faculty hiring initiative. Candidates are expected to possess the knowledge, drive, and innovative spirit that will set CIT on a trajectory to be recognized as one of the best in the country. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, establish a robust, externally funded research program, and publish in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Collaboration to create new programs, certificates, and credentials to prepare graduates for the workforce of the future is also expected. The College of Innovation & Technology continues to develop strong ties with regional industries leading to applied research and experiential learning opportunities. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Engineering, Technology, or a closely-related field by the appointment date. Please note area of expertise in the cover letter.

Candidates must show exceptional promise in both research and teaching and are expected to have an appreciation of and commitment to working with faculty and student body.

Applicants for tenured Associate and Full Professor must have academic experience demonstrating excellent teaching in experiential settings and a strong scholarship record, with potential for successful grant writing.

Candidates must also have:

  • Record of teaching excellence in face-to-face, online, and experiential settings commensurate with desired rank
  • Record of research and scholarly publications commensurate with desired rank
  • Commitment to working with the Flint-regional community and beyond.
  • Record of external funding commensurate with desired rank
  • Record of leadership and mentorship commensurate with desired rank
  • Applicants for tenured Associate and Full Professor must have academic experience demonstrating excellent teaching in experiential settings and a strong scholarship record, with a history of successful grant writing.

Associate or Full Tenure-Track Professor candidates will undergo the college review process for tenure upon hire.

Tenure is contingent upon the University of Michigan Board of Regents approval.
