The Bentley Community School District is a small-size school district east in the City of Burton in Genesee County. The district has approximately 150 students in 6th-8th grades. JOB SUMMARY
Bentley Middle School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Student Support Specialist to join our team. This vital role focuses on providing targeted support to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who experience emotional dysregulation, while also contributing to school-wide behavior support initiatives as needed. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Individualized Student Support:
- Work directly with middle school students who have IEPs for emotional dysregulation, implementing strategies and interventions outlined in their IEPs.
- Provide in-the-moment coaching and de-escalation support to help students manage their emotions and behaviors effectively.
- Support students in developing and practicing coping mechanisms and self-regulation skills.
- Collaborate closely with special education teachers, general education teachers, and other support staff to ensure a consistent and comprehensive approach to student success.
- School-Wide Behavior Support:
- Provide proactive and reactive behavior support to other middle school students on an as-needed basis, contributing to a positive and orderly school environment.
- Assist in monitoring student behavior in various school settings (e.g., classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, common areas).
- Support the implementation of school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS).
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Maintain excellent communication with students, fostering a trusting and supportive relationship.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues, including teachers, administrators, and support staff, sharing relevant observations and insights to promote student well-being.
- Communicate professionally and empathetically with families, providing updates on student progress and collaborating on support strategies.
- Actively seek clarity on issues, suspending judgment to gain a comprehensive understanding of situations.
- Documentation & Professionalism:
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely records of student interactions, interventions, and progress.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Take direction well while also demonstrating initiative in identifying and addressing student needs.
- Exhibit a calm and patient demeanor, especially during challenging situations.
- Demonstrate curiosity and a willingness to learn new approaches and implement them with fidelity.
- Maintain excellent attendance, recognizing the importance of consistency for student support.
- Pay close attention to detail in all aspects of the role.
- Associate's degree (minimum requirement).
- Five (5) years of experience working with middle school-aged youth.
- Demonstrated ability to take direction and show initiative.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to remain calm and composed in demanding situations.
- Curious mindset with a strong willingness to learn new strategies and implement them consistently.
- Outstanding record-keeping skills, emphasizing accuracy, thoroughness, and timeliness.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Superior communication skills with youth, colleagues, and families.
- Ability to suspend judgment and seek clarity on complex issues.
WORKDAY/WEEK:
Part-time position, 6.5 hours per day with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break
STARTING DATE:
August 18th, 2025
SALARY: $14.50/per hour
