Armstrong Middle School Guidance Counselor

Qualifications

• Valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate, NT endorsement, or Michigan School Counselor license
• Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling (preferred)
• Teaching or counseling experience at the secondary level (preferred)
• Experience with Student Information Systems
• Excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, parents, and staff
• Strong organizational skills

The AMS School Counselor will provide a comprehensive guidance/mentoring program to meet the needs of all students. Responsibilities include consultation with teachers, mentors, staff, and parents to provide support in the following areas.

• Support the social, emotional, and academic needs of a caseload of approximately 300 students
• Exercise the use of crisis intervention strategies
• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions
• Provide academic support to all students and be involved with students who require accommodations provided through IEPs, 504s, or other special needs
• Assist students with completion of Xello and career-based learning
• Assist with end-of-year activities related to 8th grade honors and awards
• Work with at‑risk populations by identifying students early and providing appropriate support to student achievement
• Actively participate in a diverse learning community that embraces acceptance and supports students' emotional and social growth
• Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs
• Other duties as assigned

This position reports to the AMS Building Principal.
