Job SummaryThe K-12 Health and Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in health education and physical education that promotes lifelong wellness, physical fitness, healthy decision-making, and positive social-emotional development. The teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that supports the academic, physical, and emotional growth of all students.
The teacher develops and implements standards-based instruction aligned with Michigan Health and Physical Education Standards and Academy curriculum, assesses student progress, and collaborates with staff, families, and community partners to support student success. The teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe learning environment in classrooms, gymnasiums, fitness facilities, outdoor learning spaces, and during school-sponsored activities.
Description of Duties Student Learning and Achievement- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in health and physical education for students in grades K-12.
- Prepare students to meet district, state, and federal academic expectations through the implementation of the Academy curriculum and instructional practices.
- Promote lifelong fitness, healthy lifestyles, nutrition awareness, personal wellness, and responsible decision-making.
- Facilitate development of motor skills, physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and personal responsibility.
- Differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Monitor academic and physical education progress of individual students and classes.
- Utilize assessment data to guide instruction and improve student outcomes.
- Implement Academy curriculum and philosophy in assigned health and physical education courses.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional activities, and assessments aligned with Michigan standards and Academy goals.
- Integrate technology and innovative instructional strategies when appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records of student achievement and progress.
- Ensure active student participation and engagement during instructional activities.
- Establish and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Apply Academy and classroom expectations consistently and effectively.
- Implement proactive behavior management strategies.
- Communicate expectations clearly to students.
- Ensure proper supervision of students in classrooms, gymnasiums, locker rooms, fitness areas, outdoor activity spaces, and during school-sponsored events.
- Follow established safety procedures and protocols for physical education activities and equipment use.
- Inspect and maintain equipment and facilities to promote student safety.
- Promote healthy lifestyle choices and positive wellness habits.
- Teach age-appropriate health topics, including personal wellness, nutrition, physical fitness, mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, and injury prevention.
- Monitor student participation to ensure safe engagement in physical activities.
- Maintain current knowledge of safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
- Motivate students to perform well and respond promptly to student needs.
- Maintain positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, administration, and staff.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
- Encourage student participation in Academy events, activities, and wellness initiatives.
- Support and work cooperatively with Academy staff.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a positive attitude.
- Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Academy.
- Adhere to Academy policies, procedures, and professional expectations.
- Meet attendance and punctuality requirements.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning and growth.
- Demonstrate commitment to educational excellence and student success.
- Communicate with the Dean of Academics regarding student achievement, concerns, and instructional needs.
- Prepare and maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and grade records.
- Maintain an orderly, secure, attractive, and nurturing learning environment.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school improvement initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academics.
- Bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate Health and Physical Education endorsement(s) required.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Teaching experience in health and/or physical education preferred.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation.
- Satisfactory performance ratings in instructional delivery and classroom management.
