Job Summary:
The Building Substitute Teacher assists in covering classes for the Academy staff. He/She will create an encouraging learning environment for students while their regular Teacher is absent. The Building Substitute Teacher will effectively manage and instruct the class from morning homeroom, to tidying up the classroom after the students have left and completing all functions of role of the teacher while providing coverage.
PrincipalRoles and Responsibilities
- Provide opportunities for academic achievement and success for all students
- Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for all students
- Manage the class effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
- Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of all students
- Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground and in the cafeteria
- Responsible for establishing positive relationships with students and staff
- Maintain confidentiality for all students and staff
- For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans in collaboration with the Dean of Academics
- All other duties as assigned
- Must meet requirements for substitute teachers as established by the Michigan Department of Education
- Criminal records clearance
In order to successfully perform the essential duties of this job, the employee would ideally be able to meet the following physical demands:
- Occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Stand and walk frequently.
- Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year.
- Withstand a moderate noise level.
