Description

Be at the forefront of change and become part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team at the University of Michigan-Flint's Social Work Department in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences. The Social Work Department at UM-Flint is seeking a LEO Lecturer I for the Fall 2026 semester to teach SWR 535 - Social Work Practice in Schools at 25% effort.

This is an online asynchronous course.

Course

Description:

Introduction to school social work practice, including theoretical foundations of the school social work profession and service delivery, education policy, educational justice and ethics, and the intersection between social work and education. Provides a foundational understanding of the role of social workers in schools, with a focus on how schools function and how current education policies and practices impact students. Emphasis on historically marginalized and vulnerable students by examining school disciplinary methods, opportunity gaps, justice in schools, and the social worker’s role of advocacy.

Students engage in self-reflection and explore concepts of privilege, power and oppression in the school system, critical school social work, and social workers’ positionality in the education system.

Responsibilities

Provide course instruction through a range of methods including but not limited to recorded lectures, group discussions, activities, discussion boards, case studies, grade assignments, quizzes and tests, offer support through multiple mediums (emails, office hours etc.) to support students' academic success, grade key assignments using rubrics developed for Michigan Department of Education (MDE) School Social Worker standards, and work collaboratively with department faculty.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Master's of Social Work (MSW) Degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program
  • School Social Work certification
  • Two years experience as a licensed clinical social worker (LMSW) in a school setting
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience teaching in an MSW program
  • Experience with curriculum development and innovative online teaching modalities, including synchronous and asynchronous instruction
