GENERAL
SUMMARY:
Schedule: Full Time Day Shift
The Pharmacy Specialist is a pharmacist who, by virtue of knowledge gained through special training and/or substantial experience, has become the institutional expert in a major area of pharmacy practice. The Pharmacy Specialist assumes overall leadership responsibility in directing the pharmacy-related activities in his/her area of specialty practice by planning, developing, and implementing new and/or improved systems or services. Generally works independently of direct supervision, and initiates discussion and action as necessary with other departments or clinicians in order to resolve problems and/or to effect change.
The Pharmacy Specialist plays a role as a teacher and is responsible for helping other members of the staff master those skills necessary to effectively practice in his/her area. The Pharmacy Specialist uses scientific technique in applied research designed to resolve problems encountered in daily practice, and regularly contributes to the general body of knowledge pertaining to his/her specialty.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to fulfilling all other duties and responsibilities of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Specialist:
- Maintains an active practice in his/her specialty area and serves as the institutional expert regarding pharmacy practice issues which arise in or from that area.
- Plans, develops, and implements new, high-quality, cost-effective pharmacy programs and services relating to the specialty area of practice.
- Provides direct direction, oversight, support and evaluation of 6th year Doctor of Pharmacy Students assigned to his/her area of responsibility
- Provides proper training and direction in pharmacy functions and procedures for personnel assigned to the specialty area.
- Identifies and resolves daily operational and/or clinical problems which arise in his/her area of practice working with staff from other departments as necessary.
- Designs and conducts applied research. Contributes regularly to the pharmacy and/or medical literature.
- Represents the department at appropriate internal and external meetings
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED:
- Must hold a degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and must complete a residency training program or have equivalent experience in hospital pharmacy practice.
- ASHP approved PGY1 residency or equivalent hospital experience preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of pharmacist experience or the equivalent training and experience at another institution, preferred.
- Must have demonstrated the ability to meet and exceed practice standards set for a Level II pharmacist. (Henry Ford Detroit Hospital Only)
- Must be able to serve as an institutional authority in a given specialty practice area.
- Must have demonstrable leadership abilities and exhibit teamwork when working with others.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills which enable him/her to contribute effectively in the dissemination of information to all levels of health care personnel in the institution. Should have a proven research/publication record.
- Must be qualified to work with pharmacy students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Must have a previous work history of reliability, dependability, and willingness to assume additional responsibilities.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES
REQUIRED:
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan. If eligible, licensure must be obtained within 30 days of hire; failure to obtain licensure will result in termination of the Pharmacy Specialist position.
