Summary
This position is for a Social Work Program Coordinator who supervises a Behavioral Health Interprofessional Program (BHIP) within the Mental Health Service of VAAAHS. A BHIP clinic serves veterans with psychiatric, substance use, psychosocial and medical issues. The coordinator personally delivers services and oversees the coordination of comprehensive services and activities for veterans with a range of mental health diagnoses.
QualificationsApplicants pending completion of required educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Requirements- United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA Policy).
- Education:
Master’s degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates from schools in candidacy status do not meet the requirement until full accreditation is achieved. - Licensure:
Hired or reassigned positions in the GS‑0185 series must be licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the master’s level. State requirements can be found at /T38
Hybrid/. - English Language Proficiency:
Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f); may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees who meet criteria. - Grade Determinations:
The applicant must demonstrate competency at the GS‑11 and GS‑12 levels, including advanced practice skills, judgment, supervision, and program coordination. - Experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade:
One year of experience, demonstrating progressive professional competency and advanced practice training (e.g., certificated or post‑master’s training). - Licensure/Certification:
Must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and capable of providing supervision. - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Program coordination and administration; writing policies and procedures; supervising multidisciplinary staff; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, evaluating program areas; providing training, orientation, and guidance; policy development; data‑driven quality assurance. - Physical Requirements:
Office‑based and sedentary work with some community‑based care, moderate activity; government vehicle operation; walking up to a mile; climbing 2‑3 flights of stairs; lifting small objects; computer use for electronic charting.
- Manage and operate key clinical, training, and administrative activities for the BHIP.
- Develop, implement, and oversee programs, policies, and procedures for the BHIP.
- Supervise multidisciplinary staff including psychiatrists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, and peer support specialists.
- Monitor program outcomes using a data‑driven quality assurance process and comply with accreditation, VACO, and hospital requirements.
- Serve on committees representing the VAAAHS Mental Health Service as needed.
- Provide clinical consultation to various disciplines and training levels (psychology and psychiatry residents, nursing and medical interns, social work trainees).
- Lead, guide, and consult on staff education and development.
- Cover mental health service staff as requested by the Chief or delegates.
- Complete treatment planning, goal setting, case management, consultation, referral, resource utilization, advocacy, crisis intervention, education, prevention, case/care coordination, and supportive counseling.
- Offer evidence‑based individual, group, and advanced level care management interventions for veterans with psychiatric diagnoses.
- Uphold ethical responsibilities to veterans, colleagues, and VA in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics and federal regulations.
- Work Schedule:
8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday–Friday. - Recruitment Incentive:
Sign‑on bonus not authorized. - Permanent Change of Station (relocation assistance) not authorized.
- Pay:
Competitive salary with regular salary increases; higher step rate possible for higher qualifications. - Paid Time Off: 37 – 50 days annually (13–26 leave days, 13 sick days, 11 federal holidays).
- Parental Leave:
Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment. - Child Care Subsidy:
Eligibility after 60 days for employees with family income below $144,000; subsidy up to 25% of eligible costs, max $416.66 monthly. - Retirement:
Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. - Insurance:
Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care coverage. - Telework:
