Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job

Provides instructional leadership, clinical simulation training, and hands‑on laboratory instruction for students enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program. Responsible for teaching administrative and clinical skill sets aligned with national credentialing standards ( AAMA , AMT , NHA ) and State of Michigan healthcare regulations. Prepares students for entry‑level practice in outpatient clinics, physician offices, and ambulatory care settings.

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct academic and laboratory supervision of students during course instruction, skill check-offs, and clinical lab sessions. No direct employee supervision.

Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities
  • Deliver high-quality lecture and practical laboratory instruction in clinical competencies (e.g., phlebotomy, EKG , vital signs, specimen processing, injections, infection control) and administrative functions (e.g., Electronic Health Records, scheduling, billing/coding fundamentals).
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, lesson plans, lab setup protocols, and skill assessment rubrics aligned with program outcomes and institutional guidelines.
  • Ensure strict student adherence to OSHA standards, HIPAA regulations, CDC infection control guidelines, and college safety protocols during lab simulations.
  • Evaluate and document student competency in clinical and administrative skills, providing constructive feedback and remediation as needed.
  • Maintain accurate academic and attendance records using college learning management and administrative software.
  • Prepare students for national credentialing examinations ( AAMA CMA , AMT RMA , or NHA CCMA ), including registration, payment, validation, etc.
  • Participate in curriculum review, program assessment, faculty meetings, and institutional accreditation processes.
  • Qualifications
  • Active National Certification:
    Must possess and maintain an active national certification as a Medical Assistant from an accredited agency:
    Certified Medical Assistant ( CMA ) via AAMA ;
    Registered Medical Assistant ( RMA ) via AMT ;
    Certified Clinical Medical Assistant ( CCMA ) via NHA
  • Healthcare CPR Certification:
    Active Basic Life Support ( BLS ) for Healthcare Providers ( AHA standard).
  • Education:

    Associate Degree in Medical Assisting, Health Sciences, Nursing, or a related allied health discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Clinical

    Experience:

    Minimum of 3 years of recent clinical practice experience as a certified/registered medical assistant in an ambulatory care or outpatient clinical setting.
  • State & Regulatory Clearances:
    • Must pass a State of Michigan Criminal Background Investigation ( CBI ) prior to employment in accordance with state healthcare instructional environments.
    • Must pass a 10-panel drug screening and provide proof of required immunizations (TB, Hepatitis B, MMR , Varicella, Tdap, annual flu).
  • High level of proficiency in clinical procedures (venipuncture, injections, vital signs) and systems.
  • Additional Desirable Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, Healthcare Administration, or Higher Education.
    • Prior teaching, clinical instruction, or preceptorship experience at the community college or vocational level.
    • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas) and modern educational technology.
    Physical Requirements /Working Conditions
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move actively around clinical lab spaces for extended periods (up to 4-6 hours).
    • Fine motor dexterity required to safely demonstrate clinical procedures and handle medical tools/needles.
    • Ability to lift and carry laboratory supplies and equipment weighing up to 25-30 lbs.
