Job Summary

The Resident Advisor position is essential to the success of the students in the residence hall. The staff in Housing and Residential Life will be committed to an educational approach in order to provide for the most meaningful experience for our residents.

Responsibilities*

Key responsibilities of the position include implementation of Housing and Residential Life's mission and learning outcomes.

Housing and Residential Life learning outcomes include:

Community Engagement
: creating opportunities to help develop the whole student in a manner that builds responsible living and contributes to student learning. RAs will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Developing relationships with their residents. RAs are expected to have regular one-on-one interactions in order to get to know each resident individually. RAs will also help to connect residents to one another.
  • Building community in the residence hall by participating and encouraging casual social interaction, planning and implementing social and educational programming, and demonstrating consistent availability and accessibility to residents.
  • Becoming well acquainted with and knowledgeable about residents, academic, and social progress. RAs will alert HRL about residents who appear to need additional support, and make contact with students at the direction of HRL and/or other university officials.
  • Leading floor and community meetings as needed to address community issues and relay important information. RAs also assist residents in proactively addressing individual and community conflict.
  • Supporting their residents' leadership development through the encouragement of involvement in Hall Council.
  • Designing passive educational strategies such as bulletin boards and door decorations to better enhance the community.
  • Support the dining service and staff by eating with residents, and providing consistent and constructive feedback to assist in continuing to develop a positive dining experience.

Student Development
: crafting community through responsible communication, decision making, and behavior that considers both individual and collective needs. RAs will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Encouraging students to act with reason, to assume responsibility for their actions, and to be consistently considerate of the rights and freedoms of others.
  • Being attentive to and reporting all health and safety concerns in the residence hall.
  • Interpreting and explaining the Code of Student Conduct (CSC) and Community Living Standards (CSL) to students and hold students accountable in a fair and objective manner.
  • Documenting all violations of the CSC and CLS in a fair and objective manner, and participating as required in the student conduct process.
