Job Summary

  • Van Drivers are responsible for transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions in an agency vehicle; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition; ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vans and assisting with routine agency deliveries and or transports if needed.
  • They exercise responsibility for operation of the vehicles.
  • Van Drivers should have a basic knowledge of the role and purpose of nonprofit organizations and have a clear understanding of the agency’s mission and work.
  • The Van Drivers must present a professional appearance and represent the agency to the community at large.
  • The Van Drivers must be able to engage with others in a customer service mindset and provide all clients with peace of mind for student safety.

Duties and Responsibilities Client Transportation
  • Ensures passenger safety as a top priority.
  • Drives agency vans for the purpose of transporting students, including disabled students, over scheduled routes and to/from the agency and/or field trips in a safe, courteous and timely manner.
  • Abide by speed limits and practice defensive and safe driving habits at all times.
  • Instructs and assists students and other passengers (e.g., seating, restraints, special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from vehicles including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Ensures transportation routes are made as scheduled.
  • Consistent with agency policies, assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
  • Informs agency supervisor, parents/alternate caregivers, etc. of practices and incidents (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, procedures, suspicious situations, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for follow-up action and/or proper procedures.
  • Never leave passengers on van unsupervised.
  • Ensure the safety and welfare of students entering or exiting the van by positioning the van to ensure they do not have to cross the street to board the van or access their home.
  • Never leave a child’s home until they enter the door of their home.
  • Monitors passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers.
  • Count the number of students getting on the van and exiting the vans and check the vehicle at the end of the route to ensure no children are left on the van.
  • Performs first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health care needs of passengers.
  • Responsible for responding appropriately in any disaster or potentially dangerous situation and maintaining student safety above all.
Other Duties
  • Maintains client confidentiality.
  • Maintains a respect, understanding and competence for client cultural differences and socioeconomic diversity as well as race, gender/gender identity, language and other differences.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, windshield wipers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements. Performs weekly inspections of overall vehicle safety and reports any problems to supervisor.
  • Must report any maintenance problems to supervisor immediately and never operate an unsafe vehicle.
  • Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g., oil, water, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition.
  • Prepares vehicle for inclement weather conditions including scraping and cleaning windows, mirrors, etc.
  • Completes all required paperwork including but not limited to, route change sheets, timecards, and vehicle repair requests.
  • Recommends routes to supervisor for the purpose of coordinating routes and maximizing the agency’s transportation services.
