Adjunct Instructor - Academic English Program (AEP

The University of North Alabama invites applications for adjunct (part-time) teaching positions expected to be available in the area of the Academic English Program (AEP). Adjunct instructors utilize proprietary course materials designed and produced by AEP Online to provide instruction as part of the Academic English Program (AEP). AEP Online is offered on the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), which is compatible with most computer browsers.

Adjunct instructors normally teach no more than three 50-minute classes per day in-person or online. Payment for AEP adjunct teaching is $2,400 per course, per 8-week session. We currently have openings for both in-person and online teaching, as well as a combination of the two.

Application for this position serves as application to an approved adjunct pool from which adjuncts will be selected each semester, based on enrollment and the needs of the department. This program was formerly known as English as a Second Language (ESL).

• Provide instruction to students enrolled in the AEP by teaching assigned classes according to established curriculum, policies, and procedures;
• Conduct office hours in person or via Zoom (for online courses) offering individualized student assistance for one hour per week per course assignment;
• Attendance is strongly encouraged at regularly-scheduled and special AEP meetings, including faculty meetings, training sessions, and special events, especially for locally-based applicants;
• Attend regular meetings with the AEP staff for reporting, mentoring, and supervision purposes;
• Complete administrative tasks such as class assignment activities, record keeping, grade report production, and other required paperwork;
• Participate in appropriate training and activities for continued professional growth and development, including attendance and full participation in professional development meetings during the term and end-of-term, when applicable;
• Work cooperatively with other instructors and administrators for the benefit of the program;
• Complete additional AEP-related tasks as required within the scope of the regular work period and job description;
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree in TESOL or
• Master’s degree in a relevant field plus a certification in TESOL, TESL, or TEFL that indicates a knowledge base and skill set that includes, at a minimum, the following:
  • Language teaching methods;
  • The nature of language/languages (e.g. introduction to linguistics);
  • The structure of English (e.g. syntax, phonology, morphology, discourse);
  • Second language acquisition;
  • Intercultural communication (e.g. sociolinguistics, cross-cultural studies);
  • Practicum experience.
• Previous teaching experience with adult learners or in a post-secondary setting is required;
• Online teaching experience is preferred;
• Preference will be given to those that indicate a familiarity with Canvas or a similar learning management system.
