Description

This position serves as the environmental health and safety program coordinator and is responsible for supporting environmental, health, and safety compliance programs across campus. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, coordinating safety training, maintaining regulatory records and documentation, investigating incidents, managing hazardous waste activities, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position works closely with campus departments, contractors, and regulatory agencies to promote a safe and compliant work and learning environment.

Essential

Job Duties
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of campus facilities, laboratories, shops, and work areas and document findings;
  • Investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and safety concerns and prepare written reports with recommendations;
  • Coordinate hazardous waste collection, storage, documentation, and disposal activities in accordance with regulatory requirements;
  • Monitor and report pest control issues, fire alarm systems, and elevator inspection records/operating issues;
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and support the hazard communication program;
  • Coordinate and document required environmental, health, and safety inspections, testing, certifications, and permits;
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA, EPA, ADEM, NFPA, and other applicable environmental and safety regulations;
  • Maintain required environmental and safety records, reports, permits, manifests, and compliance documentation;
  • Assist departments with safety-related questions and provide technical guidance regarding regulatory requirements and best practices;
  • Coordinate safety training programs and maintain employee training records;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for environmental compliance reporting and regulatory inspections;
  • Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and vendors performing environmental or safety-related services;
  • Prepare reports, metrics, and compliance summaries for university administration;
  • Create and facilitate corrective actions based on root cause analysis for injuries & near misses to drive continuous improvement to risk avoidance;
  • Serve on the emergency preparedness committee and other committees as requested;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental science, industrial technology, engineering technology, chemistry, biology, or a related field is required;
  • A minimum of five years of experience in environmental safety, chemistry, biological science, occupational health, or industrial hygiene is required;
  • Three to five years of EHS, safety compliance, environmental compliance, facilities safety, laboratory safety, or related experience is required.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • OSHA 30, CHMM, ASP, CSP, or similar certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Current, valid driver's license is required.
