Job Description
A transportation dispatcher plays a vital role in managing the logistics and coordination of transportation operations. This role is essential for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of transportation services, making it a critical part of the logistics and supply chain industry.
Key Objectives and Responsibilities- Scheduling and Dispatching: Assign vehicles and drivers to pick up and deliver goods or passengers based on customer requests and needs.
- Route Planning: Plan and adjust routes, assign drivers, to ensure timely and efficient deliveries, considering traffic, weather, and other conditions.
- Communication: Maintain constant communication with drivers, customers, and other departments to coordinate activities and resolve issues.
- Monitoring: Track the location and status of vehicles and shipments using computer systems and GPS.
- Record Keeping: Maintain logs of activities, delivery times, truck fleet assets and inspections and any issues that arise. Prepare and submit reports on performance and activities.
- Customer Service: Address customer inquiries and complaints, ensuring a high level of service.
- Compliance: Ensure all operations comply with company policies and relevant regulations.
- Continuous Improvement: Work with the local team to improve logistics processes to reduce freight costs.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills. Familiarity with local roads and transportation networks.
- Previous experience in a dispatch or logistics role, preferred.
- Ability to use dispatch software, GPS, and other tracking tools.
- Lifting capacity – ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Mobility – prolonged periods of time on feet, standing, bending, etc.
- Exposure – moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and non‑climate‑controlled environment.
- Noise tolerance – noise levels may be high at times.
