JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: After-School Literacy Program Coach

Employment: Part-time, seasonal

Pay: $18-21/hour

Reports To: Program Coordinator

Work Hours: approx 5 hours per week for the duration of the program

Schedule: Program duration for Fall 2026 is August through September; need Wednesday and Thursday availability late afternoon

Benefits: semesterly merit-based raises (a possible $0.50 increase each continued semester capping at $21/hour); professional development and mentorship opportunities

SUMMARY

This role is responsible for delivering the Read Better Be Better before-school and/or after-school literacy program. The Program Coach is usually the only the designated RBBB adult leader on site, guiding the program and creating a safe, engaging space for up to 32 students.

The Program Coach may facilitate the RBBB K–1 program and/or the 2–3 program. The RBBB K–1 program pairs kindergarten and 1st-grade Readers with 4th- and 5th-grade Leaders; the RBBB 2–3 program pairs 2nd- and 3rd-grade Readers with middle school Leaders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitate the Read Better Be Better program from start to finish each term, including all program sessions, student activities, and end-of-term graduation events

Deliver the Read Better Be Better program in accordance with the structured curriculum, ensuring each session and the program term as a whole is implemented consistently and effectively

Set up program materials at your designated site in advance of each session, and return the site to order at the end of each session, including carefully storing books, carts, and supplies for future use

Take attendance, administer, and submit all required program paperwork and student surveys

Guide and support student Leaders as necessary, including mentoring a High School Program Assistant when applicable

Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment while encouraging student participation

Wrap up each program session and safely dismiss students according to site and RBBB procedures

Ensure all RBBB procedures and program structure are followed consistently

Communicate program successes, challenges, and student progress to the RBBB Program Coordinator, and maintain general communication with partner organization to optimize student experience

Attend RBBB Orientation and Program Coach Training(s) prior to site placement

Attend weekly offsite Coach meetings and all-team mandatory meetings at RBBB headquarters each term

Host informative sessions and/or other relevant recruitment activities as needed

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Valid IVP fingerprint clearance card (or ability to obtain prior to start; RBBB offers reimbursements for application and fingerprint service fees) and successful completion of a Department of Child Safety (AZDCS) Central Registry check

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/ongoing professional development

  • Basic proficiency with email, mobile devices, and standard office technology
  • Ability to participate in virtual meetings using MS Teams or other video platforms

Ability to use digital systems, which can include personal devices to take attendance, submit program paperwork, and complete required timekeeping and onboarding forms

Ability to engage and motivate K–8 students across multiple age groups in a safe and supportive environment

Ability to maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment

Ability to work independently while following established program procedures

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with students, on-site staff, and RBBB team members

Strong organization and time management skills, including punctuality and reliable attendance
