Registered Nurse
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting with examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. The RN applies appropriate nursing skills in the area and treatment of inmates/residents.
The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. They prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepare the examining room and equipment. The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. The RN communicates with Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and/or other emergencies. They examine and assess new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries or inmates/residents who become ill or injured.
The RN refers inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required by their condition. They perform emergency procedures as needed and notify Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. The RN monitors inpatient hospitalizations for early releases as appropriate. They provide guidance, supervision, and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
The RN maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies. They utilize established policies and procedures in decision-making but use sound independent judgment in performing their duties. The RN regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services. They maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. They closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses. The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. They comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. The RN observes and records inmate/resident behavior. They inspect the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents, securely storing or safely disposing of supplies and equipment.
The RN provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. They assist with preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs. The RN interprets and processes governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents. They review, process, and respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. The RN facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing approved medical services.
They prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. The RN takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
