Description:

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.

This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.

The nurse applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates or residents.

Technical and clinical procedures will be performed within the scope of education and licensure.

Appropriate nursing skills will be applied in the care and treatment of inmates or residents.

Attendance at sick call with the physician to see inmates or residents is required.

The RN prepares a list of inmates or residents to be examined.

Examining rooms and equipment will be prepared for use.

The nurse operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.

Communication with Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders is essential.

Examinations and assessments of new inmates or residents with illnesses or injuries will be performed.

Referrals to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities will be made as required.

Emergency procedures will be performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider will be notified for treatment orders.

Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel will be assisted.

Monitoring of inmate or resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate is expected.

The nurse provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care by licensed vocational or practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.

A good working relationship will be maintained with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.

Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures will be utilized in decision-making.

Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services will be conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.

Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained.

Assistance will be provided to review medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.

Potential catastrophic illnesses will be closely monitored.

Pharmacy use will be audited for adherence to formulary.

Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required.

Observation and recording of inmate or resident behavior will be conducted.

Inspection of the medical unit for contraband items will be necessary.

Health counseling and health education will be provided on an individual or group basis as required.

The preparation and maintenance of a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs will be assisted.

Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures will be necessary.

Processing and responding to lawsuits, with attendance at court hearings when required, will be part of the responsibilities.

Facilitation of accreditation of the medical program by providing required levels of efficiency and approved medical services will be expected.

Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures will be performed.

Appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies will be taken.
