Lateral Detention Officer

Maintain safety and security of inmates, staff and detention facilities, provide custody and control of inmates, preserve order and discipline, and supervise inmates according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center (PCSO-ADC) policies and procedures and state and Federal regulations under basic supervision.

The application and any supplemental questions are an integral part of the selection process and must be completed in full in order for you to be considered as a candidate. This role is compensated under a step pay structure with scheduled increases based on tenure and performance.

Newly hired laterals shall be placed at a step according to their full years of credited service. Years of service shall be determined based upon information contained in the application and validated based upon the number of full years paid into the Correctional Officers Retirement System (CORP) or equivalent retirement system for out-of-state laterals with service credits. Eligibility for placement at a step above entry shall be at the discretion of PCSO based upon the candidate's training and applicable job related experience.

To receive service credit, the candidate shall have attended and successfully completed a detention/correctional academy conducted by a state or county law enforcement agency and worked in an adult detention/correctional facility. Applicants with previous employment as a detention/correctional officer in a municipal or federal agency and those from the private prison sector shall be considered on a case by case basis.

Typical classification essential duties include maintaining custody and control of inmates, maintaining safety and security, supervising inmate activities, providing equal protection and care for all inmates, monitoring inmates for rule violations, performing inspections and security checks, reporting and investigating disciplinary issues, performing special duties, maintaining facility and equipment, enforcing laws, updating records, collaborating with law enforcement agencies, maintaining attendance, collaborating with team members, maintaining integrity and professionalism, maintaining confidentiality, and performing other related duties.

Minimum requirements to perform work include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, one year of corrections/detention work experience, being at least nineteen (19) years of age, a certificate from an accredited Correctional Academy, a valid Arizona State Driver's License, and passing a thorough background investigation.

Preferred qualifications include additional technical training and certifications. Additional information includes direct inmate contact, working rotating shifts, and requirements for a TB skin test.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of policies and procedures, state and Federal laws, behavior patterns of incarcerated persons, use-of-force rules, techniques of inmate control, hazardous materials, records management, decision-making, communication, operating equipment, interacting with diverse backgrounds, computer skills, working under stress, and following instructions.
