Overview

The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Building Code Enforcement is responsible for reviewing plans and making inspections of new building construction including alterations, renovations, and buildings involved in a change of occupancy (use) to ensure compliance with adopted codes and referenced standards. This position is in the field operations branch within the division.
Responsibilities- Learn to inspect in assigned territory new building construction for compliance with building codes and referenced standards in the areas of structural assembly, energy conservation, mechanical, fire protection, and life and fire safety.
- Consult with superintendents, construction managers, owners, and other officials concerning building construction.
- Schedule inspections and prepare new construction inspection reports.
- Research building codes and referenced standards to develop working knowledge of building codes.
- Regularly work with local building officials, other field inspectors, and field supervisors.
- Construction industry knowledge.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents.
- Knowledge of or the ability to develop knowledge of building codes.
- Ability to work independently.
- Analytical skills.
- Good communication skills.

Minimum Requirements- EDUCATION: High school graduate.
- EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR
SKILLS:
Two years of experience in drafting or preparing building construction documents or in the supervision of building construction. - Substitute EDUCATION for
EXPERIENCE:
An associate's degree in architecture, engineering, architectural technology, drafting and designing technology, fire science technology, engineering technology, building construction technology or related field will substitute for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. - Substitute EXPERIENCE for
EDUCATION:
NONE - SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this job classification. Must obtain certificate for Level I (one) building inspector issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction as defined in KRS 198B.090 and 815 KAR 7:070 within 2 years of employment in this job classification. Must pass (1) one of the required certification exams within the certification program, within a year.
Must complete twelve (12), department approved, Kentucky Building Inspector Program Continuing Education unit credits per year. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Conditions
Travel will be required to perform inspections. May be exposed to hazards commonly associated with building construction, which requires the following of safety procedures.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
