The Southwest Minnesota State University School of Education utilizes University Supervisors for pre‑student teaching, student teaching, and practicum teacher licensure candidate clinical experiences. Supervisors serve as a liaison between SMSU and partner schools. They support candidates during their clinical experiences by ensuring the candidate receives high‑quality mentorship, actionable feedback, and dispositional guidance that aligns with program, state, and national standards for licensure.
Responsibilities- Conduct observations (in person and/or virtual) of teacher candidates using program‑approved evaluation and observational tools.
- Provide actionable feedback in verbal and written format to promote professional growth and instructional effectiveness.
- Offer guidance and resources to candidates on lesson planning, classroom management, instructional strategies, and culturally responsive practices.
- Conduct triad meetings with candidates and cooperating teachers to facilitate reflective conversations and establish goals.
- Maintain accurate records of observations, triad meetings, evaluations, and candidate progress.
- Model professional development by maintaining personal knowledge of current teaching strategies, technologies, initiatives, and curriculum.
Supervisors are appointed and paid variable adjunct faculty credit load per candidate. Appointment terminates at the end of the semester and carries no implication of future employment. An adjunct faculty member shall not be assigned more than twelve semester credits in any one academic year, and not more than three credits in an alternative session. Mileage will be paid in accordance with current federal rates.
Compensation is per credit; the current credit rate is a minimum of $1,844 per credit.
- Master’s degree in an educational field.
- Current or prior teaching license.
- 3 years of classroom teaching experience.
- Strong communication, technological, and leadership skills.
- Ability to travel to assigned school partners.
- Experience in mentoring or supervising teachers or teacher candidates.
- 5 years of classroom teaching experience.
- Current or prior administrative license.
- Instructional coaching experience.
