Job Summary

The Southern Desert Regional Police Academy (SDRPA) was established in 2003 and is currently located at the Waters Street Facility in Henderson, NV. CSN serves as the fiscal and logistical agent for the SDRPA. The CSN Academic Director is an at‑will employee who serves under the administrative direction of the CSN Dean of Business, Hospitality and Public Services. The Academic Director acts as the academic liaison and coordinator between CSN and the SDRPA Commander and leadership.

They support the LETA Commander with advice related to training, infrastructure and academic curriculum responsive to the needs of public safety agencies within the region. The Academic Director works collaboratively with the LETA Commander to review and monitor P.O.S.T and CSN Criminal Justice academic standards including assessment of cadet learning.

Leadership and Management
  • Works closely with academy instructors, CRJ Instructional Faculty and staff to provide guidance and support in instructional methodologies.
  • Works with the Academy Commander and CSN Department Chair to develop and implement training schedules, curricula, and instructional materials.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Promotes collaborative educational partnerships between CSN, the LETA Commander, the SDRPA Executive Board, and other internal and external entities.
  • Represents CSN and the academy at college events, community meetings, and professional conferences as requested.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with college stakeholders, partners, and agencies.
  • Works closely with the CSN VPAA and the Academic Dean to promote the development of the CSN Center of Excellence in Public Safety.
  • Supports the planning and organizing of training program expansion.
Academic Duties
  • Works closely with SDRPA leadership for grading, maintaining the Academy Learning Management System, and administering student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Oversees the management and security of all tests and the testing bank.
  • Assists with regulatory compliance with the Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Ensures curriculum aligns with CSN Criminal Justice academic standards and course objectives.
  • Provides program analysis and participates in strategic and long‑range instructional planning.
  • Administers student learning assessment processes in accordance with CSN policy and practice.
  • Forms and reviews academic evaluation of teaching faculty at the SDRPA.
Training and Development
  • Reviews and advises on design and delivery of advanced training modules for law enforcement techniques, legal standards, ethics, and community relations.
  • Communicates new developments and innovations in Public Safety Programs.
  • Conducts instructional needs assessments and ensures training programs are up to date with best practices and legal requirements.
  • Ensures all programs comply with federal, state, and local codes, rules, regulations, ordinances and CSN policies and procedures.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the Academy Commander with assignment of faculty and assistants to courses, monitors schedules and workload, and reports attendance for all academy courses.
  • Prepares and manages academy reports, documentation, and records related to training activities and trainee performance.
  • Participates in strategic planning and development of academy goals and objectives.
  • Provides input in the development and administration of the SDRPA program annual budget process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, JD, or other directly related fields from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Five years of full‑time occupational experience in the criminal justice profession (law enforcement, courts, or corrections).
  • Minimum of two years full‑time equivalent CRJ teaching experience at the college level.
  • Experience in developing curriculum, assessments, and program analysis.
  • Knowledge of Nevada P.O.S.T. regulations and college accreditation standards, including academy course sequencing and mandates.
