Responsibilities

Southern WV Community and Technical College (“Southern”) seeks an innovative instructor committed to student success and to the mission of the college. The successful applicant will instruct courses in welding and, as needed, industrial safety based on institutional demand and the candidate’s credentials.

The successful applicant will also:

  • Utilize instructional technologies in the classroom and for distance delivery of instruction.
  • Develop, revise, and assess curriculum, course outlines, syllabi, and learning outcomes in response to institutional priorities and industry trends.
  • Advise and mentor program-specific students from initial intake through program completion and beyond, including career guidance and transfer or employment support.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, potential employers, and stakeholders.
  • Work effectively with supervisors, faculty, staff, students, and community partners as part of an education team.
  • Support program recruitment, retention, experiential learning, internships, and employer engagement within the regional welding and energy sector.
  • Assist in the development of workforce pathways in welding.
  • Deliver instruction in multiple formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous, asynchronous, and other alternative delivery modes as needed.
  • Teach at any Southern location.
Requirements

Faculty who teach courses in the career and/or technical associate degree and certificate program areas shall have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the field and/or a combination of education, training, and tested experience that documents technical competence in the field and/or program area in which they teach.

The following combinations of education, training, and tested experience meet minimum requirements for applicants who do not possess a bachelor’s degree in welding:

  • Associate’s Degree in Welding plus three years of demonstrated practical experience in oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and flux-core arc welding;
  • Two or more American Welding Society (AWS) certifications plus five years of demonstrated practical experience in oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and flux-core arc welding; or
  • Ten years of demonstrated practical experience in oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and flux-core arc welding.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities are:

  • Experience with blueprint reading and expertise in metallurgy;
  • One or more years of experience teaching welding at the community college- or career and technical center-level;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Knowledge of course development, instruction, evaluation, and academic advising;
  • Willingness to develop and teach courses online and use alternative delivery modes;
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Experience using one or more learning management systems, such as Brightspace.
Hours

A full faculty load consists of 30 credit hours of teaching per academic year, plus regular office hours and other related assignments, for a total of 37.5 hours per week. Teaching assignments may include classes at any Southern location during the day, evening, and on weekends. They may also include online, dual enrollment, and off-campus classes.
