Machinist

The Machinist Lead provides hands-on leadership within a skilled machining environment by training, coaching, and guiding team members to safely produce high-quality parts. This role oversees daily production activities, ensures adherence to standard work and quality requirements, and drives continuous improvement initiatives focused on eliminating non-value-added activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on leadership to the machining team through ongoing coaching and day-to-day guidance.
  • Train and teach team members to identify Value Added (VA) and Non-Value Added (NVA) activities in processes and set goals to eliminate NVA activities.
  • Assist in the initial and ongoing training of all new employees on the shift entering the operations area, including how to maintain and operate machines, understand daily priorities, follow correct procedures to produce quality parts, and complete required paperwork throughout the shift.
  • Provide input into the evaluation and development of team members, supporting their growth and performance.
  • Work closely with Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and other production supervisors to identify improvement opportunities and resolve problems as they arise.
  • Maintain open communication with team members and promptly communicate concerns, suggestions, and ideas to management.
  • Fill in for team members when they participate in continuous improvement activities or are absent to maintain production flow.
  • Execute the production schedule and track performance on an hourly basis.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies and materials regularly to support uninterrupted operations, and create maintenance work orders as needed.
  • Attend department meetings to communicate specific customer requirements, scheduled work hours, quality expectations, and other key information to the team.
  • Address quality concerns or defects promptly and, when requested, conduct training sessions with associates to raise awareness and resolve issues.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement projects, create standard work sheets, and ensure adherence to established standards.
  • Promote and facilitate a safe working environment while maintaining an acceptable and sustainable level of 6S (Safety and 5S) within the machining area.
  • Operate, change over, and oversee machine operations as needed to support production requirements.
  • Support programming-related tasks for CNC machinery as required by the production schedule.

Essential Skills

  • 2 or more years of experience as a Team Lead in a manufacturing environment, preferably within a skilled machining setting.
  • Experience with CNC machinery, including machine maintenance and G & M code programming.
  • Proficiency in machine operation and performing changeovers in a production environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, including the use of specific measuring tools and a solid understanding of metrology.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a focus on continuous improvement strategies.
  • Proven leadership skills, including the ability to effectively influence others without direct authority.
  • Patience and capability to train, mentor, and develop team members at various skill levels.
  • Ability to identify Value Added (VA) and Non-Value Added (NVA) activities and drive efforts to eliminate NVA work.
  • Strong communication skills to maintain clear and open dialogue with team members, peers, and management.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience facilitating continuous improvement projects within a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with creating and maintaining standard work documentation.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance.
  • Comfort working in a structured 6S environment and supporting ongoing safety and workplace organization initiatives.
