Overview

The Supplemental Staffing Team (SST) Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, analyzes, plans, implements and evaluates patient care following established patient care standards for Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH), including those established by the Nurse Practice Act. This role is based on the hired tier and float option, and the RN must be available and flexible to float to various departments and/or hospital sites throughout ARH healthcare locations in Kentucky and/or West Virginia.

The SST RN provides patient care—include same day staffing assignments, multiple assignments within a single shift, travel assignments, seasonal staffing patterns, or natural disaster/emergency response—and participates as a member of the Supplemental Staffing Team under the direction of a Director, Clinical Nurse Manager, or designee.

Essential Job Functions

Supplemental Staffing Team RNs are hired with the understanding they must float based on at least one of the following options:

  • Local:
    Float expectation within a single site based on competency.
  • Regional:
    Float expectation within multiple sites within a single region based on competency.
  • Enterprise:
    Float expectation within multiple sites across one or more regions that are >75 miles from the RN's home address, accepting assignments that range 2–13 weeks based on competency.

Enterprise Contract details
:
Contracts range from 2 to 26 weeks at facilities within an assigned region, with a maximum of 26 weeks allowed at any single location before reassignment within the assigned region.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with providers, clinical care team members, patients and families to evaluate, plan, direct and administer patient care, implementing a plan of care based on established standards, policies and procedures while addressing cultural, religious, psychosocial, physical and age-related issues.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and within the required timeframe, and communicate clinical information with members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Possess knowledge of medications and administer them safely and accurately.
  • Appropriately delegate and supervise routine technical functions to non‑licensed and licensed personnel.
  • Advocate for patient and family‑centered care, promoting that environment within the care provided; include family and patient in the plan of care, providing teaching and support where needed.
  • Embrace concepts and behaviors that enhance customer satisfaction, employee morale and improvement in the nursing profession.
  • Collaborate with the patient/family to evaluate outcomes and revise the patient’s plan of care.
  • Negotiate with the patient/family and health care team members to resolve conflicts arising from patient care or organizational issues.
  • Demonstrate appreciation of the hospital mission by acting as a resource for employees, students and residents.
  • Incorporate the professional practice model into care delivery.
  • Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement in the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required to meet the facility’s needs and customer expectations.
Qualifications Education
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience required.
  • Three (3) years of clinical experience preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, Registrations Required
  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of KY or WV, depending on legal state of residence or compact nurse licensure.
  • BLS upon hire.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire: ICU, Tele, PCU, ENDO, PACU, OR, Cath Lab, ED.
  • PALS required within 6 months: OR, PACU & ED.
  • TNCC certification within 6 months: ED Nurses.
  • De‑escalation training certification within 6 months: all clinical locations.
Preferred
  • Professional Nursing Certification.
