Job Summary
The Concrete Quality Control Manager will oversee all quality assurance and quality control functions for ready mix concrete operations. This role ensures all concrete products meet or exceed customer expectations, industry standards (ASTM, ACI, ODOT), and project specifications. The position is responsible for mix design management, testing procedures, field support, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement across multiple ready mix plants.
Essential Functions Quality Assurance & Testing- Perform and oversee fresh and hardened concrete testing including slump, air content, unit weight, temperature, cylinders, and compressive strength.
- Ensure all QC testing complies with ASTM, ACI, ODOT, and customer specifications.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of test results and quality data.
- Investigate non conforming materials or test failures and implement corrective actions.
- Develop, optimize, and maintain concrete mix designs for various applications (residential, commercial, DOT, industrial).
- Conduct material evaluations (aggregates, cementitious materials, admixtures) and coordinate with suppliers.
- Monitor moisture content, aggregate gradations, batch plant settings, and other production factors affecting quality.
- Provide onsite technical support to contractors, inspectors, and field crews.
- Troubleshoot issues related to workability, finishing, set times, placement, and performance.
- Represent the company professionally during pre construction meetings, site visits, and customer consultations.
- Train and develop ready mix plant personnel and drivers on quality expectations and testing procedures.
- Conduct periodic plant audits, including calibration checks, material storage inspections, and batch accuracy verification.
- Collaborate with operations to ensure consistency across multiple plant locations.
- Maintain all required QC records, certifications, and compliance reports.
- Prepare submittals, test summaries, mix design documentation, and project specific quality plans.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including ODOT, EPA, and safety standards.
- Lead initiatives to improve product consistency, reduce waste, and enhance operational efficiency.
- Monitor industry standards and introduce new technologies or testing methods when beneficial.
- Advise drivers and supervisors of traffic problems such as construction areas, accidents, congestion, weather conditions and other hazards.
- Build professional relationships with customer bases and drivers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 3-5 years of experience in ready mix concrete QC or similar construction materials environment.
- Strong knowledge of ASTM C31, C39, C143, C231, C138, and related concrete testing standards.
- Ability to interpret mix designs, specifications, batch reports, and construction drawings.
- Proficiency with QC software and data reporting tools.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between plant locations.
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I (required or obtained shortly after hire)
- ACI Strength Testing Technician
- ODOT Level 1 or Level 2 Certification
- NRMCA Concrete Technologist (Level 1–3)
- Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
- Excellent communication skills with customers and internal teams
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure
- Commitment to safety and continuous improvement
Physical Requirements
- Work performed in both plant and field environments, including active construction sites.
- Regular lifting of 50+ lbs. (test cylinders, samples, equipment).
- Exposure to varying weather conditions typical to Southwest Ohio.
- Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends depending on project schedules.
