PRIMARY FUNCTION
An Asphalt Distributor Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates. The operator works by applying specialized emulsions to roadways, which are then covered by a chip spreader, setting the pace for the paving operation. This position reports directly to the Paving Foreman. Class A/Class B CDL is required.
This is a union position. Successful candidates may become part of the local 14581 Steelworkers Union if they choose.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS- Drives and operates distributor truck equipped with tank to spray asphalt emulsions on road surfaces
- Connects hose from storage tank to truck tank and moves lever to fill pressure tank with asphalt liquid
- Regulates burner to heat liquid and start auxiliary pump
- Snaps or screws on spray bars to attain required width of spray
- Turns valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjusts levers to adjust height of spray bar from road surface
- Monitors flow gages, tachometer and temperature gauge to ensure uniform distribution
- Performs daily safety checks of fluid levels on oil, water, fuel and inspections for leaks and damage to machine before operation
- Is responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order
- Notifies supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired
- Understands and executes different emulsions; shifts may vary according to project
- Ensures a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
- Properly follows all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment
- Reports any problems to the manager
- Operates equipment safely and efficiently
- Follows verbal and written instruction
- Communicates effectively
- Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills
- Performs any other general duties as specified
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; one to two years related asphalt and road construction experience
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B with N‑tanker & X‑hazmat endorsement
- Thorough understanding of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving
- Passes pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check
- Passes a pre‑employment “Fit for Work” physical
- Provides valid documentation for the I‑9 immigration document
- Displays a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors and the general public at all times
- Reports to work at the designated start time
- Is willing to travel and work away from home when required; this job is for a portable paving crew requiring extensive travel
- Is willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
- Can work overtime when required
- Maintains current driver’s license that meets state requirements
- Has a motor vehicle record that meets company standards
- Is willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold
- Strictly adheres to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- Willing to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required
- Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA
- Is at least 18 years of age due to nature of working environment
- Previous related experience in construction field is preferred
