Job Description

Middle School Position begins 25/26 school year.
Salary Schedule is based on the  school year.

This is a 10-month/renewable position, that includes benefits of paid medical and leave.

New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule.

TITLE: Special Education Life Skills Classroom Aide, .875 FTE (7 hours per day + 30 minute unpaid lunch break), Siuslaw Middle (6th - 8th). Typical hours are 8am-3:30pm, Monday - Friday.

Primary Function

This position assists the Special Education teacher in establishing and maintaining a climate of learning within the Life Skills Program. Must exhibit a genuine understanding of children, and be able to provide for a wide range of student developmental needs in Life Skills in a variety of settings. Learn and follow direct guidance as outlined by SPED case manager/teacher and documented student plans, and then be able to take initiative in responding to student’s academic, emotional and physical needs, including discipline and behavior management.

Due to the inter-personal nature of training and working with special needs children, the need of a positive attitude and warm personality are considered essential. May need to assist with hygiene and personal needs of students. May need to assist with physical management of aggressive students.

Special Education Case Manager/Teacher, District Director of Special Programs, and Building Principal

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • ESSA Highly Qualified
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Experience with students with disabilities
  • Experience in a classroom setting preferred
  • Mandt training preferred, will be required to complete necessary training annually
  • First Aid/CPR card preferred, will be required to complete necessary training annually
Assigned Responsibilities
  • Adhere to plans and guidance from SPED case manager/teacher for legal requirements of IDEA.
  • Implement behavior support plans using appropriate strategies and techniques as specified in the student’s behavior support plan and directed by SPED case manager.
  • Provide for the identified physical needs of students such as toileting, feeding, therapy, medication administration and other related needs according to specified instruction or protocols.
  • Work with students on a wide range of curriculum from all levels (K-12) of academic coursework, to independent living skills and transition to adulthood curriculum.
  • Attends regular delegations to provide for health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, material, and facilities. This can include delegation to provide for injections, feeding protocols and other medical needs of students in program.
  • Attend events or program activities in the community as assigned by SPED case manager. This can include supervising transportation and inclusion of students with daily job training sites, extracurricular events, and recreation activities, and others as assigned by the SPED case manager.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information about students and staff at all times.
  • Attend and participate in behavior and physical management certification trainings as directed by SPED case manager/teacher and Special Programs Director.
  • Tutoring and/or supervising students in the Life Skills program in SPED or Gen Ed classrooms as assigned by the special education case manager/teacher.
  • Keep anecdotal records of student progress in student booklets.
  • Attend and participate in individual education program meetings for students as required by the special education case manager/teacher.
  • Assist in the administering of academic tests.
  • Maintain reinforcement activities for students involved in the special education program.
  • Report all data on student progress to the special education case manager/teacher.
  • Type necessary reports, if required by case manager/teacher.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with classified staff, licensed staff, and support personnel to establish a positive work environment.
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned duties, e.g., lunch count, breakfast duty, etc.
  • Assists the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings, parent/teacher conferences and evening school events as directed.
