School Counselor

Location: West Florence High School, Florence, South Carolina

Starting Date: July 15, 2026

Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt

Reports To: Principal

Salary Class: TCH/200 days

PCS Code: 110000

Under limited supervision, the School Counselor plans, supervises, and provides professional counseling services designed to support student success academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Responsibilities include prevention, intervention, crisis counseling, career and academic guidance, record keeping, and collaboration with school staff and external partners.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Aids students in course and subject selection and disseminates occupational information.
  • Assesses student aptitudes and abilities using test scores and other data to develop educational and career plans.
  • Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  • Plans guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industries.
  • Guides student participation in school and community activities.
  • Conducts individual, small‑and large‑group, and classroom counseling sessions.
  • Discovers and develops students’ special abilities and resolves educational handicaps.
  • Provides crisis intervention for students in immediate need.
  • Consults with parents, staff, and external experts on individual cases; makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Plans staff orientation and development activities; provides in‑service training on guidance services.
  • Advises administrators and faculty on student discipline matters.
  • Interprets the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community; facilitates the guidance program.
  • Organizes and conducts an annual career day.
  • Maintains accurate, up‑to‑date and confidential student records and documents all counseling services.
  • Provides student information to colleges and potential employers; recommends colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Plans and administers the department budget; monitors expenditures and maintains financial records.
  • Coordinates special events, projects, or programs as assigned.
  • Performs general administrative duties: composing reports, correspondence, data entry, filing, attending meetings, responding to mail and phone calls, etc.
  • Operates office equipment (computer, printer, copier, fax, etc.) and maintains equipment functionality.
Additional Job Functions
  • Performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions

Physical requirements:

light effort, sedentary to light work, occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, keyboard/workstation use. Requires ability to compare data, communicate verbally and in writing, apply logical thinking for problem solving, read and prepare reports, calculate numerical data, and manage hand‑eye coordination for office equipment.

Training and Experience

Requires a master’s degree in school counseling or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Prior teaching experience desirable. Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in school counseling; coursework in school guidance counseling.
  • Knowledge of district policies, laws, regulations, and counseling practices.
  • Strong communication skills—verbal, written, and interpersonal.
  • Proficiency with computer and office equipment.
  • Experience with classroom and group counseling, crisis intervention, and career/college guidance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
