Academic Advisor
General Responsibilities:
The Academic Advisor provides proactive, student-centered academic advising to an assigned caseload, initially focusing on first-time-in-college (FTIC) students. The position provides personalized guidance and support to promote student engagement, persistence, retention, degree completion, and successful transition beyond college.
Job Functions:
- Academic Advising, Degree Planning & Caseload Management:
Provides comprehensive academic advising and caseload management to assigned students, with emphasis on FTIC and other designated populations. Develops individualized academic plans; assists with course selection, registration, degree requirements, career and transfer goals; conducts proactive advising outreach; interprets student academic records; and maintains accurate advising documentation in accordance with established College advising standards. - Proactive Student Success, Retention & Early Intervention:
Monitors student progress and proactively identifies academic, enrollment, financial, or personal barriers that may impact persistence and completion. Responds to early alerts, develops student success strategies, connects students with appropriate College resources, and conducts targeted outreach to support retention, re-enrollment, academic progress, and completion. - Data, Technology, Documentation & Assessment:
Utilizes College information systems, CRM/student-success technologies, degree-audit tools, and institutional data to manage assigned caseloads, document advising interactions, monitor student progress, conduct outreach, and identify students requiring intervention. Reviews student-success trends and participates in assessment and continuous-improvement activities designed to strengthen advising effectiveness, persistence, retention, and completion. - Collaboration, Policy Knowledge, Training & College Service:
Collaborates with faculty, academic departments, Student Services, Career Services, and other College personnel to support student progression and resolve advising concerns. Maintains current knowledge of curricula, academic policies, FERPA, transfer pathways, and advising practices; participates in required training, professional development, committees, enrollment and student-success initiatives. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree. Preferred Requirements:
Bachelor degree plus two years of experience in student services, academic advising, counseling, or a related area; or an earned master's degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education, or a related field. The preferred candidate will also have direct academic advising experience in a community or technical college environment. Knowledge of academic advising principles, student development, student success, retention, persistence, and completion practices.
Provide effective student support, advising, counseling, coaching, or related services. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with students from diverse educational, socioeconomic, and life experiences. Ability to manage multiple student cases, priorities, and required outreach activities simultaneously. Ability to utilize technology to document student interactions, monitor academic progress, and support student success to ensure accurate and effective advising.
Anticipated
Work Hours:
Monday - Thursday, 8:00 am - 5:30 pm;
Friday, 8:00 am - 11:30 am. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet student needs during peak registration periods, orientations, enrollment events, and other college activities. Occasional evening or non-traditional work hours may be required. Must be able to provide services at FDTC campus and instructional locations as assigned.
