Job Responsibilities
This employee will be responsible for completing a variety of tasks necessary in the spawning, rearing, and culture of trout at the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery.
- Ensuring fish are fed as per chart, except in abnormal water quality situations.
- Removing mortalities daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekly in the winter.
- Recording feeding and mortalities.
- Performing inventory and moving fish when necessary.
- Cleaning raceways of fish weekly, or more often as needed.
- Monitoring feed supplies weekly and preparing orders when necessary.
- Monitoring water quality and maintaining adequate dissolved oxygen levels in all raceways.
- Recording weekly raceway data to spreadsheets and printing weekly inventory and feed sheet.
- Assisting the manager and performing managerial duties in their absence.
- Performing egg enumeration when eggs are received or spawned.
- Recording egg enumeration information, inventory information and amounts.
- Recording fry feeding/mortality and printing weekly feed sheets.
- Performing daily water quality analysis of hatchery water and weekly flow measurements.
- Ensuring stocking equipment is properly maintained and coordinating the stocking of trucks with monthly stocking schedules.
- Visually checking fish daily and reporting disease problems as they occur.

An associate degree in the technical sciences and five (5) years of experience in the wildlife/fisheries technical management.
Preferred QualificationsPrevious experience in aquaculture, fisheries, or agriculture. Proficiency in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades; proficiency with MS Office 365, especially Excel; previous experience operating heavy equipment. Ability to work in the field in adverse weather; safely operate landscaping equipment and power tools; collect, enter, and manage data reliably; operate aquaculture equipment; communicate with the public, co-workers, and supervisors; repeatedly lift heavy objects;
and work comfortably in and around water. Willing to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis, as well as after-hours emergency response. Ability to participate in some in-state travel, including overnight travel.
