Position: State Transport Police (STP) - Non-Certified Officer

Responsibilities

  • Enforces state and federal laws governing commercial motor vehicles.
  • Protects the public by preventing accidents and removing unsafe drivers and vehicles from SC highways.
  • Protects SC's environment from unsafe hazardous material transportation practices.
  • Prevents premature deterioration of SC bridges through size and weight enforcement.
  • Patrols SC highways, enforcing all motor vehicle traffic laws with a primary focus on commercial motor vehicles.
  • Assists other government agencies and the general public in commercial motor vehicle enforcement and general law enforcement.
  • Conducts and/or assists with accident investigation and investigates complaints.
  • Conducts roadside Driver/Vehicle Examination Reports on commercial motor vehicles using the North American Inspection Standard procedures.
  • Proficiently operates a speed measurement device and safely and properly operates hand scales and permanent scale facilities to conduct size and weight enforcement.
  • Maintains knowledge of state laws and federal rules and regulations.
  • Submits accurate weekly, monthly, and special activity reports in a timely manner.
  • Issues citations, prepares and prosecutes these cases in court.
  • Maintains knowledge and adheres to department policies and procedures; maintains law enforcement and inspector certifications.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must have at least a high school diploma and all following additional requirements.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Must communicate effectively with the public, co‑workers, and supervisors.
  • Candidate is under general supervision and maintains daily contact with the supervisor.
  • Must function with independence, judgment, and discretion to enforce S.C. Motor Vehicle Laws as well as Commercial Motor Vehicle size, weight, and safety regulations/laws.
  • Must perform all essential and marginal job functions of a State Transport Police Officer.
  • Must be a resident of South Carolina and have a valid South Carolina driver’s license prior to the effective date of hire.
Training and

Physical Requirements
  • Attend and successfully complete the State Transport Police Training Program at the SC Criminal Justice Academy during weekdays; weekends are not permitted.
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical fitness test and participate in daily physical training during training.
  • After training, candidate may be required to relocate to a different region.
  • Stand for extended periods, flexibly work in various positions (crouching, kneeling, lying, sitting, standing), and lift/carry approximately 100 pounds.
  • Eye glasses or contact lenses must meet an uncorrected standard of 20/100 corrected to 20/20. Must distinguish three colors—green, yellow, red—without correction.
Background Check
  • Extensive background check including credit check, criminal history, driver’s record, history of drug use, polygraph examination, and urinalysis test.
  • Contact all former and current employers as part of the investigation.
  • Applicant must answer the employer contact question truthfully; otherwise the background investigation cannot proceed.
Remarks

Additional comments:
The position is for multiple positions located throughout the state. Region assignments are based on critical need; relocation to required regions is mandatory. Salary for uncertified new hires is $57,361 annually.
