Overview

Position Function: To assist senior apprentices and First Class Linemen while actively training in line work, with a focus on line construction, operation, and maintenance of the utility’s electrical system.

Essential Functions:

  • Works with other apprentices and First Class Linemen to construct and maintain power lines within the scope of training and certification.
  • Drives and maintains Cooperative-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Studies and learns required job knowledge and skills to advance in a timely manner through the complete apprenticeship program.
  • Inspects tools and personal protective equipment.
  • Obtains and maintains a South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Completes required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicates using Cooperative-provided equipment in accordance with FCC regulations, company regulations, and policy.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly workplace, whether on company property or at a job site.
  • Attends and participates in the Annual Meeting of members, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including temporarily replacing other personnel as required.
Performance Standards
  • Works with other apprentices and First Class Linemen to construct and maintain powerlines within the scope of training and certification.
  • Digs pole and anchor holes manually or with mechanical equipment.
  • Frames poles to required standards and attaches ground wires on the ground.
  • Frames erect poles and attaches guys.
  • Sets poles, anchors, ground rods, and guys.
  • Operates a winch line to pull heavy loads.
  • Makes connections of meter hookups, transformers, and other line equipment.
  • Lays and makes connections of underground cables.
  • Prepares terminations and installs transformers for new underground installation.
  • Sets and removes barricades, flags, signs, and flares; directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Hooks up single-phase transformer connections using the correct configuration to assure end user of proper voltage levels.
  • Installs conduit to provide a passageway for underground power cables from one pre-determined location to another.
  • Installs proper signs on equipment.
  • Participates in tailgate conference to plan work assignments for the day.
  • Informs the Crew Chief, Supervisor of Construction & Operations or the Manager of Operations of conditions which are unsafe.
  • Drives and maintains Cooperative-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensures vehicles are fueled and ready to drive.
  • Sees that trucks are kept stocked with sufficient inventory of supplies.
  • Keeps vehicles clean and free of cans, paper and materials scattered in the vehicle bed.
  • Keeps truck(s) interior and exterior clean and neat at all times.
  • Keeps tools and equipment organized so that they may be easily located.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment inspections as required.
  • Complies with all South Carolina and Federal motor vehicle laws and any other laws that affect the safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Studies and learns required job knowledge and skills in order to advance in a timely manner through the complete apprenticeship program.
  • Becomes familiar with all laws and regulations pertaining to job training and safety.
  • Becomes First Aid and CPR certified and renews certification in a timely manner.
  • Learns proper handling and use of materials, tools and equipment used to construct and maintain power lines.
  • Attends training sessions as requested.
  • Becomes climber qualified and is responsible for maintaining climbing skills.
  • Becomes pole top and bucket rescue certified and participates in quarterly pole top and bucket rescue training to maintain certification.
  • Demonstrates proficiency on tasks outlined in the On the Job Training (OJT) manual in the designated time frame in order to progress with training and experience to the First Class Lineman level within a planned period of time.
  • Inspects tools and personal protective equipment.
  • Inspects tools and personal protective equipment prior to use to ensure all are in good condition.
  • Removes and replaces immediately any defective or damaged materials to ensure that they are safe and operable.
  • Checks the first aid kit to insure recommended supplies are always readily available.
