Highway Maintenance Worker III: Crew Leader

Serves a crew leader of four employees on ditching crew performing skilled manual labor, cleaning ditches/drainage structures repairs, storm drain cleaning, etc. Operates and maintain heavy motorized (backhoe) equipment in cleaning sideline and cross line ditches pipes for storm water drainage, cleaning ditches, loading trucks with filled material (dump truck, trailer) pulling various equipment, sand spreader, fork lift, motor grader, etc.

Assists foreman with duties and responsibilities, assessing daily work request within 14 days and completing within 60 days. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Operates and maintains a Jet-Vac storm drainage cleaner, blowing out driveways pipes and catch basin throughout the county.

Performs duties using manual labor in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, litter control, dead animals, cleaning drainage structures, repairing shoulder, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, and laying sidelines/cross lines. Produces daily records of work performed and materials used, record such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaint forms. Operates and maintain electric/gas powered and hand tools (e.g. chain saws, weed eater, pruner, blower, edger, drills, jacks, wrenches, air compressor, shovel, rakes, etc.

) in various phases of roadway maintenance. Sets up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorist of road work ahead. Performs duties "on-call" after normal working hours, during emergencies and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement:
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
