Position: AT - CDL Driver Trainer

Overview

This position will be responsible for all driver training functions for the CDL training program at the assigned location. The CDL Driver Trainer will have proven longevity in the field, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated physical, intellectual, and leadership ability to perform duties over the road, maneuvering range, and in classroom instruction. The CDL Driver Trainer works under the guidance and supervision of the Program Director, Lead Driver Trainer, or their designee.

Responsibilities
  • Promotes and Maintains a Positive Learning Environment
  • Convenes all assigned classes per their start and end times
  • Maintains a safe environment for all students and staff
  • Safeguards materials, records, and equipment
  • Adheres to all Federal, state, and accreditation/compliance rules and regulations
  • Serves as a professional role model to students
  • Inspires student confidence in program, faculty, and self
  • Maintains professional dress and demeanor and communication
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality when working with students, records, and administrative staff
  • Maintains an attitude of enthusiasm and willingness to cooperate and collaborate
  • Interacts with students and fellow employees in a courteous, professional, and positive manner
  • Treats students with fairness, impartiality, and objectivity
  • Provides advance notification regarding lateness, absence, and vacation schedules during substitute assignments
  • Fulfills Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date records of student progress, performance, and attendance using institution tools, as required by policy
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality with students and staff
  • Maintains flexibility in fulfilling instructional needs of the division/client
  • Delivers Instructional Material
  • Train students in all areas of trucking/driving
  • Administer written tests on classroom material and evaluate grades
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of commercial motor vehicles
  • Instruct air-brake tests
  • Instruct straight-line backing, offset backing, 45-degree alley-docking, parallel parking
  • Instruct variations in driving patterns and conditions
  • Utilize effective delivery skills (eye contact, voice, questioning techniques)
  • Draw on personal experiences to relate material
  • Assess student progress using required skills assessments to support CDL attainment
  • Demonstrate physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods, maneuver trucks, and lift up to 50 lbs
Experience and Education
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the required class level
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3 years of verifiable on-the-road experience within the last 5 years
  • MVR and background check including a drug screening
  • Ability to pass road test and DOT physical and DOT drug screen
  • Ability to maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate and pass DOT drug tests as required
  • Knowledge of pre-trip inspections, air-brake tests, and CDL driving essentials
  • Ability to teach shifting patterns and vehicle operation
  • Motivation, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching
  • Ability to work with adult learners and attend orientation before first term
  • Commitment to the school’s mission and to staying current with industry standards
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills for positive interactions with students, alumni, faculty, and employers
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and cloud-based applications
Physical Demands
  • Mobility and balance to climb in/out of cabs, perform inspections, and navigate spaces
  • Strength to handle equipment and assist with loading/unloading if applicable
  • Endurance for extended driving and instructional periods in varying weather conditions
  • Must possess and maintain valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT physical qualifications
