Position: Highway Maintenance Worker III - Specialty Crew Leader (61033993) **RE-ADVERTISEMENT**

Job Responsibilities

Serves as a Specialty Crew Leader coordinating various construction, repair, and preservation activities of bridges within a district ensuring that all work performed is recorded in the maintenance data management system. Assists the Specialty Crew Foreman as needed. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists.

Assists in the planning and scheduling of routine and preventive maintenance activities. Determines proper equipment, materials, and labor needed in order to complete tasks. Inputs data and runs reports in the maintenance data management system for the crew and performs quality assurance/quality control checks on the data to ensure accuracy of the reports. Performs skilled manual labor and operates various equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of bridges on the state highway system.

Examples may include, but are not limited to, a skid steer, mini excavator, snooper truck, bucket truck, man lift, forklift, lowboy truck and trailer. Performs a variety of bridge maintenance activities using equipment such as complex saws, power tools, measuring devices and welders. Manages assigned crew(s) in emergency and inclement weather operation; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Two and one-half (2.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
