Highway Maintenance Worker II - Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as slope mowers. These skilled functions include roadside and right-of-way mowing, brush management, mechanical bridge end mowing and other vegetation management activities. Operates large tractors with batwing mowers in routine mowing operations, brush management operations and bridge vegetation management. Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy equipment such as backhoe in various duties such as removing fallen trees from the roadway, cutting trees from right-of-way and removal of debris from roadsides.

Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, including being available for extended hours or 12 hour shifts. Operates both anti icing and snow removal equipment during winter weather operations. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a work zone according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation work zone traffic control manual. Performs other related duties as assigned.

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
