Plant Support Engineer

Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Electrical Plant Support Engineering, the Plant Support Engineer will be responsible for leading and/or supporting the activities of the electrical plant support engineering team. The scope covers mostly operations and maintenance support in addition to aid for the design team for all electrical aspects of the Thermomechanical Treatment Facilities (TTF) process at 35+ facilities globally.

This includes all High, Medium, and Low Voltage Electrical Systems

E.g. Switchgears, Relay Protection, Transformers, Motor Control Centers, etc. The troubleshooting of this electrical infrastructure supports all disciplines including steam generation boilers and their auxiliaries, feedwater pumps, deaerator systems, condensers, air pollution control equipment, ash handling and conveying equipment, metals recovery systems, etc.

The Plant Support Engineer will provide technical resolution and troubleshooting guidance to plant and maintenance teams in support of emergent or on-going challenges. They will also own root cause analyses for larger issues and as a part of this derive and support implementation of corrective and preventative actions for the Covanta installed fleet. Acting as a potential mentor for more junior members of the team, the Plant Support Engineer will share best practices and technical expertise.

Although this is a corporate engineering role, it involves extensive collaboration with sites, hence ~30% travel should be expected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical Design
  • Assist design engineering team to Review/Approve Electrical System Design documents including:
    One Line/Three Line Diagrams, DC Control Schematics, Wiring diagrams, Arc Flash, Short Circuit & Voltage Drop Calculations, Coordination Studies using SKM is a plus
  • Supports development of scope of work for Electrical AE firms on projects supporting emergent needs and coordinates with suppliers and contractors as applicable
  • Commissioning/Startup:
  • Provides on-site consulting/overview of equipment installation and preparation for service
  • Supports field activities on construction projects and provides guidance on electrical design/installation issues.
  • Troubleshooting/Problem Solving:
  • Provides direct Electrical troubleshooting support, or in some cases leverages outside engineering firms to support plant operations.
  • Analyzes Electrical failure root causes and develop cost effective technical solutions using SEL Synchro wave Event Analyzer, GE Ener Vista and similar tools.
  • Develop and maintain technical service bulletins related to lessons learned or reliability/availability solutions/best practices; assist sites with adherence to technical standards and internal/OEM bulletins.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Work with corporate and plant engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement and productivity goals.

Qualifications:

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited Institution. Minimum 4+ years engineering experience in electrical power distribution. PE License is preferred, EIT required

An ability to travel approximately 30%

Must have experience with High, Medium & Low Voltage distribution systems and electrical power generation, preferably in large utility power plant/s or large industrial facilities

Must have proficiency in understanding One Line/Three Line Diagrams, DC Control Schematics, Wiring diagrams, GA drawings related to interconnections, substations, power plants and electrical aspects of process plants including but not limited to motors, MCCs, PDCs and other electrical equipment.

Experience with microprocessor, solid state and electro mechanical protective relaying schemes (Medium Voltage) including coordination and development of relay settings or troubleshooting of relay related trips. SEL relays experience is highly preferred.

Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data to identify trends is required.

Must have effective written and oral communication skills; must be able to analyze data, write technical reports, develop work packages (incl. engineering drawings), and the ability to handle multiple assignments

An ability to effectively communicate complex information, while considering audience understanding and level

Ability to work on multiple facility emergent support concurrently.

Experience in using SEL Synchro wave Event Analyzer, and GE Ener Vista and similar tools.

Experience using SKM tool for coordination study purposes.
