Description
Under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Library Clerk II performs a variety of customer service, clerical, and technical support duties in the daily operation of the public library. This position assists patrons with library services, circulation activities, computer and technology use, program support, and access to library resources. The Library Clerk II serves as a primary point of contact for the public and is responsible for providing courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient customer service while supporting the library's mission of promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement.
The position requires proficiency in library circulation systems, basic computer troubleshooting, digital resources, and public technology assistance. Work involves independent judgment in handling routine patron inquiries, processing library materials, maintaining records, assisting with library programs and events, and ensuring the library environment remains welcoming, organized, and accessible to all users.
Essential Functions- Provides exceptional customer service to patrons by answering questions, resolving routine issues, and assisting with access to library resources, services, and programs.
- Performs circulation duties, including checking library materials in and out, processing holds and reservations, registering patrons, collecting fines and fees, and maintaining patron records.
- Assists patrons with the use of computers, printers, copiers, scanners, mobile devices, wireless internet access, digital resources, online databases, and other library technology.
- Provides basic troubleshooting and support for public-use computers, technology equipment, and software applications; escalates complex issues as appropriate.
- Shelves, organizes, inventories, and maintains books, periodicals, multimedia materials, and other library resources in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists with collection maintenance activities, including shifting materials, shelf reading, identifying damaged items, and preparing materials for repair, withdrawal, or replacement.
- Supports library programming by assisting with the planning, preparation, promotion, setup, operation, and cleanup of educational, cultural, and community events.
- Creates and distributes promotional materials, displays, and informational resources to increase awareness of library services, programs, and technology offerings.
- Assists patrons in locating information and conducting basic research using library catalogs, databases, digital resources, and reference materials.
- Processes routine clerical and administrative tasks, including data entry, filing, report preparation, correspondence, scheduling, and maintaining records.
- Handles cash, processes payments, balances receipts, and prepares deposits in accordance with established financial procedures.
- Maintains a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming library environment for patrons and staff.
- Assists with opening and closing procedures, including securing facilities, equipment, and materials, as assigned.
- Train and provide guidance to Library Clerk I staff, volunteers, interns, and temporary personnel as directed.
- Participates in community outreach activities and represents the library at community events, meetings, and educational programs as assigned.
- Maintains confidentiality of patron records and other sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and library policies.
- Monitors patron compliance with library rules and policies and address behavioral concerns in a professional and respectful manner.
- Stays current on library services, technology, digital resources, and emerging trends to better serve patrons and support library operations.
- Performs all duties in accordance with City policies, safety regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
