Job Summary

Working closely with the Closing Manager the Assistant Closing Manager provides leadership and direction within the club and drives club performance. The role oversees the recovery, utility, and perishable departments (produce, meat, bakery, deli, dairy/freezer) and overnight prep to keep all areas clean, stocked, and ready for morning open. The manager maintains policies and procedures, delivers a positive service experience to members, and ensures Grand Opening Look Daily (GOLD) club conditions.

The Assistant Closing Manager assists in audit compliance efforts, collaborates with Business Partners, oversees onboarding, certification, and training for food safety and operational excellence, and serves as Manager on Duty (MOD) for the club as needed.

A valid Serv Safe Food Safety Certification is required and must be maintained. In Florida, the role must obtain a qualifier certification through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for retail propane oversight and complete a yearly certification for a forklift license. BJ’s covers applicable costs and training.

Responsibilities
  • Own end‑of‑day execution:
    Oversee recovery, utility, and perishable departments and overnight prep.
  • Lead by presence:
    Actively walk the floor during closing hours to observe execution, engage members, and support team performance.
  • Maintain GOLD Standards through close:
    Guarantee a Greet, Anticipate, Appreciate (GAA) and Fast, Friendly, Full, Fresh, Clean experience until the last member exits.
  • Ensure full‑functioning departments:
    Validate registers, perishable stations, and service areas during final member transactions.
  • Support member issue resolution:
    Resolve or elevate member concerns during closing for timely service recovery.
  • Drive in‑stock and freshness:
    Monitor evening inventory levels, product rotation, culling, and merchandising execution in perishable departments.
  • Enforce sanitation standards:
    Confirm completion of daily cleaning checklists, sweep logs, waste pulls, and safety protocols.
  • Lead recovery team productivity:
    Coach recovery and utility clerks to ensure efficient task execution and zone coverage.
  • Utilize tools effectively:
    Leverage Hot List, NAFS, electronic reports, price sign reports, pallet tag usage, productivity dashboards, and department‑level reporting.
  • Support audit readiness:
    Ensure daily sanitation, cold chain, and safety checklists are completed and documentation is compliant.
  • Maintain equipment functionality:
    Identify and report issues with compactors, refrigeration units, and cleaning equipment.
  • Coach onboarding and certifications:
    Reinforce Serv Safe, PPE compliance, and department‑specific training during onboarding and ongoing development.
  • Drive improvement in underperforming areas:
    Support bottom quartile departments to close performance gaps through action plans and daily execution standards.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally:
    Partner with the Closing Manager, Assistant Club Managers, Club Manager, and Department Leads to improve closing routines.
  • Conduct quality and date checks:
    Inspect products for expiration dates and condition, removing damaged or outdated items to uphold food safety.
  • Utilize BJ’s MY WORK system:
    Execute assigned tasks and ensure compliance with company initiatives and product liability protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned:
    Provide operational support outside primary scope as directed by club leadership.
  • Operate safely and efficiently:
    Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance and effective equipment use.
